TRUE BLOOD Season 4: "Spellbound" Review
"Spellbound" has to be the best episode of "True Blood"s fourth season thus far. The ep really just goes full-force with the conflicts between characters, and even gives us a really sweet witch-coven vs. vampire showdown at the conclusion of the episode. A showdown which yields some surprising results. First off, let me say that this whole thing with every guy, werewolf, or vampire on the show being in love with Sookie is getting really, really annoying. We already have Bill and Sookie. That's how it started off. Now we have Bill/Alcide/Eric and Sookie. I'm surprised Lafayette hasn't even tried to take a crack at her. At any rate, I just wish the show would offer up some better storylines than every new guy falling for Sookie. I mean she's a waitress, not a debutante.

So "Spellbound" sets up some nice conflicts which begin in this very episode. Alcide and Debbie seem to be fitting in nicely with their new pack, led by the long-haired biker-looking dude. Who we later find out, is the father of Luna's daughter. This sucks for Sam, because it looks like he's now got a werewolf battle on his hands. Well, ok...these aren't werewolves. They're just wolves, but anyways...Sam and the wolfpack leader have an intriguing confrontation at Luna's house, which leads me to believe that these two will be seeing a lot more of one another as the fourth season draws to a close. To make matters worse, the wolves had agreed to stay out of the West Side Story'esque war between the vamps and witches. But Alcide makes a decision later in the episode to try and protect Sookie anyways. |
Debbie, in wolf form, trails Alcide and much to her dismay...learns that he still has feelings for Sookie. Despite, him telling Debbie he was done with her. I think this will lead to an alliance between Debbie and the wolfpack leader guy. An alliance which could spell trouble for Sam and Alcide. Seeing as how both scenarios are similar. Luna has a new love in Sam. And Alcide seems to gravitate to Sookie over Debbie. If Sookie and Sam were to be bumped off, the wolfpack leader guy and Debbie would have their respective bo's all to themselves. But with just a few episodes left in season 4, I question how quickly and fluidly, this storyline could be pushed if the writers have decided to take it in that direction.
As for Sookie, she has a rough go of it in this episode. After Antonia's spell only yields one vampire death, and Jason manages to save Jessica from a fate worse than the true death...Sookie removes Eric's silver from his body. But because Eric hasn't fed in some time, he cannot heal as quickly. Sookie offers up her blood to help. But this has a one thing leads to another, effect, and pretty soon, Sookie and Eric are taking things to a whole nother level. The twist is the episode's high point for Sookie. But the low point comes at the finale of the episode when Sookie is near death, after catching a stray bullet during the vampire/witch skirmish. This leads into next weeks episode where Sookie will possibly die?
Most likely not. But it would be cool of Sookie were given a vacation from Bon Temps for awhile. I mean "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" killed Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) I believe twice. And her name was in the title of the show! So why can't "True Blood" kill Sookie atleast once? Maybe put her in the ground until mid season 5, and see how Bon Temps reacts, copes, and carries on without her. Would new alliances be formed? Would new enemies emerge? All kinds of interesting questions would pop up if Sookie truly died as a character. But I don't see the writers having the courage to kill off Sookie with about 5 episodes left in the season. I just don't think this show, albeit on HBO...is that courageous. Atleast at this point.

I like the new Tara though. And I hope she stays until the show ends. Tara has been scarred by the vamps, and like a few others in Antonia's coven, she is willing to take up arms against them. So to speak. But during the vampire vs. witch melee at the cemetary, Bill saves Tara from an angry and vengeful Pam. So perhaps the Tara-venger is not here to stay? I hope so. I hope despite Bill saving her, she still sides with Antonia, and possibly carries on her war against the vampires even if/after Antonia is either killed or dispelled from Marnie's body. Lafayette has an interesting run in in "Spellbound" though. He once again, comes upon the black-lady-ghost singing to Arlene and Terry's baby. But this time, he does not confront her. He instead leaves the premises. But we finally find out black-lady-ghost's backstory. And why she sings a lot, and why she seems infatuated with Arlene and Terry's baby. The backstory is sort of predictable though. |
Not as cool or mysterious or dark as I had hoped it to be. It does tie into the old Bon Temps southern history though. But I just found the story to be kind of "eh". I guess this late in the season, it can't be too complicated or drawn out. The woman though follows Lafayette home, and possesses him. Now using him as a tool to reclaim what/who she believes is her baby. It'll be interesting to see though about this guy involved in black-lady-ghosts backstory. Maybe it's Terry? What if the guy who robbed her of her child for "old days reasons", was Terry? Wouldn't that be a bombshell huh? And how would that change his relationship with practically everybody?
As for Jason, well him and Jessica get quite close in this episode. But Hoyt and Jessica finally break up. And he goes one step furthr, disinviting her from his home. I hope this is the last we see of Hoyt. The guy has no real reason to stick around the show at this point. In fact, I'd rather have Eggs in place of Hoyt. Atleast Eggs had a connection to Tara. And they were both human. Hoyt however is human. Jessica is a vampire who is very flirty. So we pretty much knew it was a matter of time before those two split. However, the intriguing moments come when Jessica runs to Jason for comfort after the breakup. Thus, Jason disinvites her for his home and she's "off" again. So what will Jessica do now? Perhaps she will turn evil? Being proteged by Pam into a sort of student/teacher kind of thing? That would be interesting. Next week's episode will be a somber one though. After all, Sookie is dead..."allegedly". So, someone's gotta bring her back.
