TRUE BLOOD Season 4: "If you Love Me Why Am I Dying?" Review
So post "You Smell Like Dinner", Bon Temps gets even crazier in episode 3 of the new season, "If You Love Me Why Am I Dyin?" Eric is still without his memory, thanks to Marnie the witch. Interestingly, and oddly enough...we learn a cool, new little nugget of info about Marnie in this episode. Information which will slowly materialize into something more substantial as season 4 continues I surmise.

As for Eric, well Sookie reluctantly agrees to help him with his current "situation", and decides to keep him at her place. This after she alerts Pam to the latest developments, and Pam completely disagrees that handing Eric over to her and keeping him at Fangtasia would be the best course of action. This back and forth of dialogue once again leads into the hinting at Bill Compton being a lot of more evil that we at first thought. Pam's biggest fear is that a mentally-erased Eric will be a target for Bill, who she fears will deliver him to the "True Death". |
All of this stuff with Eric, eventually leads us to our first Alcid sighting of the new season. Sookie visits him to see if he'd agree to look after Eric. Since she after all is still creeped out by the fact that Eric owns her house, and has built himself a cubby within it also, and all that jazz. So she tries to pass him off to Alcide. But Alcide already has his own houseguest, in a seemingly reformed, and V-free Debbie Pelt. Debbie, if you remember...was one of season 3's second-tier villains. It'll be interesting to see if she returns to her evil ways at some point during season 4. But I doubt it. With Marnie, the new King Bill, a supposed return of Russell Edgington, and an apparent mystery villain (more on that later)...I doubt they'll have any room for Debbie Pelt to go baddie again.
But if they managed to find room, it would be pretty cool and intriguing. And by the way, updating that list above with Crystal and her "kin-folk". Who now have apparently turned Jason into one of them, so he can continue the bloodline of her "people". A plot which we learned late in season 3, was orchestrated by Crystal all along. This is just another huge screw up for Jason, choosing the wrong girl. Again. But this time, he is really in deep. And it's gonna be interesting to watch and see how and if Jason ever comes out of this whole thing. Since apparently now we know he is no longer all the way human. Thanks to Crystal. This is another scenario where we see Jason's stupidity and naivety have led him into grave danger.
Episode 3 also furthers Bill as a possible season 4 villain. Bill has a vampire brought to him who was caught on camera feeding on a human. He recommends the True Death as his punishement. Now it's hard to see Bill going all the way evil this season. As it might be a two season process, or just might not happen at all. But then again, since episode 2 gave us the flashbacks of Bill and the female leader of the vampire league discussing certain business, it is possible that Bill is now just a politician. Willing to do pretty much anything to keep the vampire image as clean as possible. And if that means throwing his own kind under the bus, then so be it. It'll be interesting to see just how far this new Bill goes. And speaking of the new Bill, it would seem he's also got a "new" love interest. In the woman who he had to infiltrate Marnie's circle.

Not sure how long that will last, but it further complicates the reuniting of Bill and Sookie anytime soon so I guess it's a necessary evil. Lafayette, Tara, and Jesus meanwhile aren't done with Eric. Tara and Jesus are pissed off at him, and want to do something about it. They didn't take kindly to Eric barging in on their session, and nearly killing Tara and Marnie. Lafayette however would rather throw himself at Eric's mercy, and beg for forgiveness. Obviously, fearing retaliation for Eric seeing as how he's a powerful vampire. And police protection from him is pretty much worthless. But Lafayette is obviously unaware of Eric's current mental condition. Tara and Jesus however find out, and just as Pam is about to possibly klll Lafayette, they intervene, and cut a deal with her. Offering to bring Marnie to reverse the spell, in exchange for Lafayette's life. But a preview of episode 4, suggests that this won't go smoothly when it eventually..."goes". It's a good episode for Tara though, as she has her hardcore moment with Pam, but also her soft and sweet moments with Sam. |
The two pretty much flirt like crazy with one another but eventually decide that they'd be better off with their current beau's. Sam's shifter girl, and Tara's "girl" girl. Things on the Jessica/Hoyt/Terry/Arlene front take a turn for the bizarre meanwhile. After consulting Bill about her "cheating" on Hoyt (which basically for a vampire means feeding on someone else), Jessica returns home to Hoyt. Only to find the creepy doll from season 3 has somehow magically returned to the house. Jessica uses her vampire charms to smooth things over with Hoyt, but passes the doll off to Arlene and Terry. The former of which is still concerned that her baby is going to turn out evil like serial-killer Rene from season 1, who's the baby's daddy. I suspect this this doll story is only gonna get weirder and I am intrigued to see how it's gonna tie into Terry/Arlene and the baby and their storyline.
Other intriguing notes in episode 3 include Tommy getting offered a deal from an oil and gas man, who wants to extract the resources on the land of Tommy and his mother. Tommy tries to swing the deal to his advantage, but telling Sam about it proves to be his downfall for the time being. There's also a strange mention in a scene on television about Reverend Steve Newland being "missing". He was allowed to go free at the end of season 2. And was supposed to show up somewhere in season 3. So mentioning him now might suggest a reappearance of the shifty Reverend somewhere in season 4. Sookie meanwhile at the end of the third episode gets a visit from her fairy godmother, a visit which quickly turns tragic. Albeit in a comical sort of way. In next week's Episode 4, "I'm Alive And On Fire"...these characters certainly have a lot to work out.
