TRUE BLOOD Season 4: "I Wish I Was The Moon" Review
The latest episode of "True Blood"s 4th season, "I Wish I Was The Moon"...was a study on how much can be jammed into one 60-minute episode of "True Blood". The ep begins with Terry and Arlene's place burning down. A fire which also ends up taking out Holly's place as well. Yes...before you ask. It was "THE GHOST"! Who was responsible for causing this fire. No one dies though, so season 4 is still without it's first major character death. So the question now is...who is this mysterious ghost, or spectre? Which continues to haunt Arlene and Terry and their baby? Well, we get our answer in the latest episode. But it's not necessarily a clear answer. We get a look at the ghost. Who it seems only the baby can see. So this show has now actually used it's first cliche in it's existence.

"True Blood" normally bucks the trend of just about everything. But with a story arc now that Arlene's baby is the only one who can see this ghost, we're entering mainstream ghost movie territory. How many crappy ghost flicks rated PG-13 have we seen come and go where the baby is the only one who can see the evil spirit? And everyone else is effing clueless? Looks like we've got one of those a-brewin' right here. The question remains though...is this ghost friend or foe? What does it want? I assume, since it caused the match-book flare that ended up burning down Terry and Arlene's place, it might be foe. But then again, you never can tell in the "True Blood" world. One thing is for sure though...this ghost storyline just got a thousand times more interesting. The fire causes Sam to not be able to open up Merlotte's, so he dials up Tommy and asks him to open the restaurant for him. |
Tommy though has his own issues to deal with. As in becoming a skinwalker. A power which he has gained now that he's killed his parents. This ends up allowing Tommy to transform into Sam, and Tommy wastes no time in ruining Sam's life by firing Sookie, and running away Luna. Sam, being tied up with the fire aftermath and all, isn't around to stop any of this from happening. But don't expect that Tommy will escape this episode unscathed. Meanwhile, Marnie is still being held prisoner by Bill in the underground prison, and Pam is still rotting away. Faster now than ever. It looks like this might be all she wrote for Pam. But I am still up in the air as to whether the character will die this season or not.
But things are getting no better for Eric either as he is still without his proper faculties, and seems to be growing closer to Sookie. Bill shows up on the scene though, and shuts down the momentary Eric/Sookie fireworks. He then takes Eric into custody, and quickly fasttracks a request to the authority to deliver to Eric the "True Death". Questions though, as to whether Bill is doing this to keep Eric from Sookie. Or to get Eric out of the way to grow his power. Or because he simply just does not like Eric. Probably all of the above. But this whole triangle turns out to be an interesting one, and takes an even more intriguing turn much later in the spisode.
Jason meanwhile continues to be a wasted character this season. But atleast he manages to not be handcuffed to a bed anymore. Sookie finds him, frees him, and he spills the beans to her about Crystal, the werepanther nonsense, and everything in between. Jason still believes he's gonna become a werepanther. Totally oblivious to the fact that Jessica gave him some of her blood to save his life. So any werepanther genes given to him by Crystal and her "kin-folk"...were most likely washed away by Jessica's blood. The writers obviously forgot this as well. As I saw no reason to even continue the werepanther crap in this episode.

That honestly should've been shelved one episode ago. But I guess this episode needed some filler in a few areas, so having Jason rant about turning into a werepanther for 20 minutes in this episode killed some time. *Shrugs*. At any rate, on more interesting matters...Lafayette and Jesus got their much needed "help", in Mexico from Jesus's father. Unfortunately, that help came with a price. A price which might be too high for Lafayette and Jesus. Oddly enough, I felt the Jesus/Lafayette storyline was getting a bit dull and stupid. But this ep gave it a dose of much needed excitement with the rattlesnake sacrifice, and some other bizarre strangeness. But I suspect once the happy couple get back to Bon Temps, they'll be back to vanilla again. Tara meanwhile, is still having her own relationship problems. |
With her lesbian friend from Baton Rouge. The time finally comes where Tara has to explain to her, her true identity, and why she hid from it. Things turn out to go not as Tara had expected though. Which might prove to be good or bad for her in the near future. It all depends on what the writers decide though. And I still think there's some undercover stuff with Tara's girlfriend. I mean there has to be right? We know she's not a vampire. CHECK. But maybe she's something else?
I felt this episode wasted a lot of time on stupid things though. Like Jason's werepanther rantings. And then by the end, rushed what could've been some key dramatic moments. Marnie being possessed again, and meeting the vampire who was responsible for torturing the witch/ghost that has possessed her in the past. And Eric being set up to take the "True Death"...at the hands of Bill. I think this is definitely the weakest episode of season 4 so far. Even when you factor in Alcide seemingly having made nice with the local packmaster, who returns to visit Alcide (And Debbie), in better more humble spirits. I think overall, the episode was weak. But then there's the preview for next week's episode, "Cold Grey Light Of Dawn"...which looks like it'll be a terrific episode. I hope so. Something to wash away the missed opportunity that was "I Wish I Was The Moon".
