TRUE BLOOD Season 4: "Cold Grey Light Of Dawn" Review
"True Blood"s fourth season trucks on, with "Cold Grey Light Of Dawn". The latest episode of this fourth season of the hit vampire series on HBO. This episode was a turning point in the season I felt. Many things occured which will set up a pretty nice run of episodes up until the season finale, which will most likely come in mid September. A good episode to pull the season out of the small rut it fell into after the last episode. And it's a good thing too. The latest episode seems to have disposed of the fodder characters seen early in season 4. Things have for the most part, been focused and triangulated back to Bon Temps major players. Bill, Sookie, Eric, Pam, Alcide, Sookie, Tara, Lafayette, Arlene, and Sam. When it comes to Sookie and Eric, their relationship took a kinda sweet, yet strange turn in the last ep.

Luckily, Bill wasn't around to witness it. But, honestly...one can never tell how things will turn out between Eric and Sookie as of now. Especially after what happened in the last episode, and also if Eric gets his memory back. But what if? What if all of this stuff by Eric is a ruse? What if Eric never lost his memory? Or has gotten it back already. But is just leading Sookie on? Wouldn't it be something if that turned out to be? It would take some clever and tricky writing to explain why Eric reacted the way he did after his confrontation with an Antonia-possessed Marnie. But hey, anything is possible in this show. Speaking of Marnie. It seems we might have seen the last of her. Antonia has fully possessed Marnie as seen in "Cold Grey Light Of Dawn". And she is pissed. She doesn't waste any time going after the vampires either. |
Even going as far as to send one to assassinate Bill. The attempt fails, but it's of no consequence. Antonia has bigger plans in mind. And she joins forces with Tara and then through her, tries to gather up a few more like-minded people for her circle. So she can make the vampires sun-walk again. A move which was seen in flashbacks in earlier episodes. A spell which would draw the vamps outside into the daylight. Thus making them commit mass suicide by sunlight. Tara agrees to join Antonia, only after a highly-pissed-off Pam attacks and nearly kills Tara and her girlfriend. Her girlfriend escapes, but Pam has Tara in her clutches. That is until some gawkers show up with cameras. Pam, knowing the vampire league's new "No Dead Humans" rule, bails. But not before she delivers a cold threat of death to Tara.
Thus, it's pretty already set in stone that Tara would join forces with Marnie to kill the vampires once solicited to do so. But Tara also manages to get Holly involved as well. It'll be interesting to see if Tara and Sookie have to do battle with one another at some point this season. Tara is definitely anti-vampire now. After wavering for a few seasons. It seems she's had enough, and what happens between Tara and Sookie this season, might have repercussions in later seasons. Lafayette and Jesus meanwhile survive their encounter with the spirit world back in Mexico. But not before Jesuses father gives Lafayette a familiar warning. That he is a very powerful medium. Now we got a glimmer of that last season. About Lafayette's "really powerful powers". But I am wondering when the writers are actually gonna delve into this further.
And honestly, I wish they'd do it sooner rather than later. But once Lafayette returns back to Bon Temps, his "powers", are quickly tied into the Arlene/Terry/Black Ghost Lady storyline. A storyline which got a lot less intriguing in this episode because once again, so little time was spent on it. But the question still remains, what does this lady want? Is it the baby? And what are her motives? She seems nice and sweet enough in person, but the match-fire two episodes ago, and the creepy doll, and the messages on the wall seem to suggest she might have a malevolent nature hidden beneath the sweet smile. Or perhaps? She's protecting the baby from another spirit? I don't think there's enough time left in this season to fully explore this one. And I kind of think it might run into season 5.

I hope so. Because I'd hate to see such an intriguing nugget of a story just rushed and cut. As for Bill, once he learns of Antonia's resurrection, he implements a quick counter-strategy to her proposed spell. Trying to protect the local vampires (Jessica included), from the ensusing spell, which would basically turn them into crispy critters with fangs. Speaking of Jessica, she isn't given much to do in this episode. But the love triangle between her, Hoyt, and Jason gets more interesting when Hoyt shows up at Jason's house, and the two have a few awkward moments. I kind of think Jessica would leave Hoyt for Jason if it came to that. But the question is, what would become of Hoyt if that were to happen? Would he slink away forever? Or become vengeful and such? |
Considering Hoyt's still human, my guess is the former. As for Jason and Jessica, I guess if they were to ge together, it would bring him and Sookie closer again. Considering there's a shot Sookie and Bill might get back together at some point. But poor Alcide, once again, his character is wasted in another episode. He doesn't get much screentime in this ep. But it's looking like he's being quickly puhed out of the Sookie love triangle. And will ultimately end up staying with Debbie Pelt. I hope so. I don't think I can take another person pining for Sookie in this show. We already have Bill, and Eric, and who knows who else might show up later on. Andy isn't given much to do in this episode either, beyond an awkward encounter with Holly at Merlotte's.
I believe the whole "V" addiction thing is a loose-string just to keep Andy busy this season. This after he had a very intrical place in season 3. As for Sam, well...it looks like he and Tommy might be done for good. This after Sam learns through Luna, that Tommy shapeshifted into him, and had "relations" with Luna. That coming before he threw her out. Looks like messing with Sam's potential new lady was the last straw for Sam with Tommy. So these two might be done. And now, Tommy has no one. What repercussions will come of the split? We shall see. Next weeks episode is set to be a showdown between Antonia's side and Bill's side. Whoever survives, will most likely be key in how season 4 ultimately ends.
