Plot:Still grieving the death of nine-year-old Alice their only child at the jaws of a crazed dog, vet Patrick and pharmacist Louise relocate to the remote town of Wake Wood where they learn of a pagan ritual that will allow them three more days with Alice. The couple find the idea disturbing and exciting in equal measure, but once they agree terms with Arthur, the village's leader, a far bigger question looms what will they do when it's time for Alice to go back?

My Thoughts:Those kids are creepy aren't they?

Review:"The Wake Wood" is another one of those..."creepy kiddie" movies. A film whos plot is spawned by characters making more highly foolish decisions. The film follows a couple who lose their darling daughter to a German Shepard attack. The dog shows no mercy, leaving the child a dead, bloody, mess. They never quite recover from this, and refuse to just let things be. So they move to a remote town called Wake Wood.

Where through Pagan ritual hijinx, they are able to bring the child back. But under the pretense that at some point...they'll have to return her to the earth. The couple agree to the terms, but as any good horror movie afficionado knows...the sh*t will hit the fan eventually. Spelling doom for everyone. Especially...when it comes to reanimating the dead. Which is exactly the movies problem.

Albeit it creepy at times, and unsettling at others..."The Wake Wood" regurgitates what has been done in American-horror cinema many, many times before. The pain of a huge family-related loss. The refusal to let go and move on, and the end decision to reanimate/return/unearth the deceased. These situations never turn out for the best. But King's "Pet Semetary" did it best. "The Wake Wood" is in that mold, of the dead not coming back..."right".

But the movie draws out it's obvious twist of, "when will the little girl turn evil"...until the very end. Which is pointless because we all know it's coming. Maybe not now, or later on, but before the film ends...we know the little girl, who once she's returned, at first...seems normal enough. Will turn wicked and devilish, and start dispatching of people she doesn't like, or those who offend her. Oh and by the way...there's that little issue of "returning her to the earth". Yeah, I don't think she is gonna go, "quietly"....if you know what I mean.

After all, she's a walking-dead "thing". They don't just wait around until the living decide it's time to go back to the soil again. So for all it's high drama and tragedy within it's story..."The Wake Wood" is so predictable and obvious, that it's a pain to sit through at times. And boring at other times. Aidan Guillen gives a decent performance as Alice's father, but in a flawed movie like this...it's hard really to believe anyone's performance will change things for the better.

The movie kills it's ability to be taken seriously when it pretty much telegraphs what will occur from start to finish, in the first 15 minutes of it's run. But the filmmakers do try to make the movie atleast somewhat swervy. There's a twist or two with the pagan cult leader leaving out some small details about Alice's resurrection, and also Alice returns from the dead with some freaky jedi-mind-trick powers. All of these pail in comparison though, to a movie which gives away too much of it's ending at the very beginning.

It also doesn't help that the drama is carried over too far and overlaps with the films attempt at scares. Nor does it help that the movies cast lacks an attention-grabbing character. Other than undead-Alice...watching a lot of these characters felt like fighting-sleep...honestly. In the end, this British/Irish horror production just doesn't make the grade. Not only does it copycat the errs-of-resurrection story arc, but it doesn't do anything new, interesting, or intriguing with it. Thus..."The Wake Wood" in the end, winds up being nothing but an empty grave.

Positives:The movies opening scene is very powerful, dramatic, and intense.

Negatives:Problem is...after Alice is killed in the tragic dog attack, the movie doesn't manage to find any other way to keep the viewers interest. Once you break out the "resurrecting-a-dead-child" routine, which has been done countless times in horror films...you'd better back it up with something more interesting than just running-out-the-clock.

Overall:One star out of four.
