[The Violent Kind]
Plot:One night at a secluded farmhouse deep in the Northern California woods, a small group of hardened young bikers and their girlfriends are tormented when one of the girls becomes savagely possessed, and a gang of "Rockabillies" seemingly from the 1950's descends upon them to collect what is growing inside her.

Cast:Cory Knauf, Bret Roberts, Taylor Cole, Tiffany Shepis, Christina Prousalis, Joe Egender.

My Thoughts:Intriguing supernatural romp.

Review:"The Violent Kind" is one of those rare supernatural horror films that doesn't take it's cues from other supernatural horror movies. That's always a good thing. No one likes a copycat. And this film is anything but. The movie follows a group of young Northern California bikers, who head to a secluded farmhouse for a typical biker party with booze, girls, and the like. But during the festivities...one of the girls becomes possessed...and it sets in motion a chain of terrifying demonic attacks.

Which eventually lead to something even worse to come. While "The Violent Kind" does an excellent job of slowly, surely, and calculatingly playing out the slow, cruel, and gory demise of this house full of people...one thing that it kind of fails at, is gathering it's facts quick enough to build on a cohesive story. The movie just throws random stuff out there during its tenure, and while a lot of it at times doesn't stick...it does make for an intriguing viewing experience in many areas.

And sometimes...I guess a film can be somewhat chaotic, and at the same time work within the chaos to keep things fun and exciting. While this film isn't super-edge-of-your-seat-exciting though...it does just enough to hold your interest. And make you want to sit through till the end, and see what all of these random possessions and weirdness is all about. The film somewhat mimics "Night Of The Demons", and films like it. Where some otherwordly force stalks about outside an old barn and or house or mansion.

And rather than just bursting in and claiming everyone in one fell swoop...it takes people over, and then uses them to kill and possess others. In that regard...the film certainly can be in the proverbail 'vein'...of many other horror flicks. But it still manages to stand on it's own at a 90%+ clip. There's not a ton of blood, gore, and violence in this movie. But there certainly is a good amount of it, in all the right places. So fans of blood, gore, and carnage will most likely enjoy this movie on those levels. The cast includes acting vets too such as Tiffany Shepis and Taylor Cole. Both of which aren't strangers to the genre.

With Shepises extensive B movie background, and Cole having appeared in the remake of "April Fools Day". Both actresses play vital female character in "The Violent Kind". And as for their fates? Well...not gonna spoil that for ya. But lets just say both actresses see their fair share of action in the movie. And aren't just relegated to obligatory tit shots and or whiny damzel in distress routines. Always a good thing in my eyes. The movie also has some trippy moments both visually and psychologically, as it uses psycholgical scares in many scenes...and in others...just flat out grosses you out of freaks you out with some violent attack and death sequences.

And then there's the third act, which kicks the weirdness into super high gear. And also reveals a few twists, turns, and surprises along the way. It's all done in a horrific, creepy, and yet at times black-humor'esque fashion. And it all leads to a climax which I actually instantly approved of. As it again, like the movie itself...tries to be different in it's direction. The ending, while predictable and not surprising on many levels...atleast gives the viewer a change up from the usual horror movie ending.

And even leaves a few unanswered and interesting questions, that might set up for a potential sequel or followup movie. "The Violent Kind" isn't perfect in it's cinematic make up, but it's a movie that tries, and gets most of what it wants to do correct. It gets a thumbs up from me, mostly for effort.

Positives:Good performances by most of the cast. Interesting villains, spooky moments, and creepy and psychological scares are in abundance here. A good ending as well.

Negatives:The ending has traces of predictability despite it's refreshing turn. Also the middle of the movie at times tries to rush the story without putting the proper pieces into place beforehand.

Overall:Three out of four stars
