[The Open Door]
Plot:Beautiful, innocent and trusting high school senior, Angelica (Cathrine Georges) is enjoying, but not yet at ease with, her new found position as BFF of popular crowd queen bee, Staci (Sarah Christine Smith). The new relationship is causing tension at home with her parents, as under Stacis influence, Angelica is breaking rules for the first time in her life. She is also falling hard for nice guy football star, Brad (Mike Dunay), while Staci is trying to run interference for Owen (Ryan Doom), the spoiled, handsome leader of the in crowd who has set his sights on the virginal Angelica.

While the school is buzzing with rumors of a pirate radio station that just appears on full moon nights granting callers their hearts desires, everyone is gearing up for the party after the big game. But when Angelica is grounded, and tells the manipulative Staci that she cant be by her side, Staci pulls out all the stops in her quest to get Angelica to sneak out and join her. As the evening progresses, and Angelica fears that Brad is slipping through her fingers, she notices the full moon, and in desperation, turns to the radio and finds the pirate station whose soothing orator is both irresistible and mysterious.

When Owens second in command, Spike, (Daniel Booko) informs the crew that Angelica is home alone, they decide to stop by and have a little fun at her expense. Meanwhile Angelica calls in to the radio show and makes her wishes and vows to the Oracle, who assures her all will come to pass. As the unsuspecting teens arrive for what they think will be a harmless prank, the dark power that has been unleashed begins to make its evil presence known and Angelicas wishes begin to be fulfilled in a terrible twisted nightmare that will have all of her friends fighting for their lives.

Cast:Catherine Georges, Sarah Christine Smith, Ryan Doom, Daniel Booko, Mike Dunay, Guy Wilson, Jacob Head, Ian Kitzmiller, Jessica Anne Osekowsky, Kate Enggren, Clint Carmichael, David Alan Graf, Jen McAllister, Shantel VanSanten, Courtney Halverson.

My Thoughts:Intriguing step into darkness.

Review:Most of these small budget supernatural horror films don't really try and do anything original with their story, characters, or plot. Hence why they fail nine times out of 10. Doc Duhame's "The Open Door"... is a horse of somewhat, a different color though. The movie follows a teenage girl named Angelica. The biggest worries on her mind are school, and boys. Mostly because she runs with the popular crowd, led by her best friend Staci. A friendship which has gotten Angelica's foot in the door, so to speak, with a budding relationship with the school's top jock Brad. But Owen, the male leader of the popular crowd, himself has a thing for Angelica.

But Staci likes Owen, which presents a whole word of dramatic problems amongst the characters in the film. Meanwhile when Angelica tries to sneak out for a big party to be held later that night, her parents inform her that she's still grounded. In addition, her mother doesn't approve of Angelica's relationship with Staci, who couldn't be more of a polar opposite ot Angelica personality wise, but her clout with the popular crowd is what keeps Angelica around. In her desperation, Angelica remembers the local legend of a strange pirate radio show, that pops up every full moon, and offers to grant callers any wish that they desire.

When Angelica gets sucked into calling in, by the shows smooth operators, it proves to be a fatal mistake. "The Open Door" is an interesting movie. Even though it's script can seem messy and not without a few holes at times, overall, it's a movie that brings a certain newness to the table in regards to it's story. The base element here is the pirate radio show. And all the party/girl/boy stuff is just a catalyst to bring the show into the lives of a group of young people. Although you wish at times, watching the film...that a better catalyst could've been thought out, rather than some "90210"/"Gossip Girl" BS, still...it works when the film finally begins to move into motion with it's ultimate story goals.

The jist is that the pirate radio show is this local legend. And the kids all talk about it, but they don't know what it truly is. The show has a cult following of sorts, and also has a mythology around it. But this is as usual, a mistake. As it's infamy only leads to more teenage curiosity, which leads to a pile of dead teenagers when it's all said and done. And some unsuspecting, naive person dials up the show, and makes deals with the shows dj's who refer to the wish granter as "The Oracle".

In a way, this movie mimics films like "Devour", and other movies where desperate people make foolish deals or foolish decisions to involve themselves with a dark "something", that they know nothing about. But because they can't see past what "they" want, and how badly they want it...they pretty much dismiss any sense of fear, worry, or suspicion, and decide to give it a whirl anyways. This of course ends up leading to imminent doom, death, and chaos. And in "The Open Door"...the result is no different. But the film makes sure to play this thing out to the end, by prolonging the real bad consequences of Angelica's call until the third act.

Instead deciding to use acts 1 and 2 to build the story, create a mystique around the radio show, and set up a dark scenario at the finale, when some people from the big party drop by Angelica's house to prank her. And this is where all hell breaks loose, literally. The intriguing thing is though, this movie does a lot without going kamikaze with the blood, gore, and graphic visuals. The film has strong horror violence, and terror...but it also uses a lot of suspense as well. Suspense which works because the films villains are more tricksters and manipulators.

Rather than stalk and slashers who just come at the movies heroine a whole bunch of times, only to be faced down repeatedly. The writer and director also do a good job of keeping the pirate radio shows gothic hosts motives a mystery. You aren't given too many clues too early on as to what they want, or why they're doing what they're doing. All is eventually revealed, but slowly and methodically. Not too early, and not by some accidental spat of bad writing.

Which happens in some indie's where a plot twist is telegraphed way earlier than it should've been. When the end of the movie finally comes, it's pretty dark, pretty crazy, and very twisted. With some nice visuals and tricks that a film on a budget could utilize to it's advantage. And best of all, the finale makes sitting through all of that "90210"/"Gossip Girl" drama BS which occurs earlier in the movie, seem atleast 75% worth it. The very end of the movie would be a glaring weakness I'd point out though.

This film does well for itself by avoiding the cliches and pitfalls of occult/supernatural horror cinema. But the final scene of the movie plays out like a bad syfy channel film, and is one of those "everyone is not who they seem", kind of deals. It gave me a chuckle, but the whole wolf-in-sheeps-clothing-authority-figure thing/plot twist has gotten a bit old at this point. "The Open Door" overall is worth seeing atleast once though. It's a clever little indie that does it's best with what it has available at it's disposal.

Positives:Good idea for a film, and is well executed within the confines of cinema. Intriguing bad guys, a strong script, and a great finale.

Negatives:The teenager characters are annoying and obnoxious at times, and the whole love triangle thing gets annoying when it's overused and overexposed a bit too much. Rather than just being touched upon somewhat.

Overall:Three stars out of four.
