[The Inheritance]
Plot:Follows a Black family reunion, which turns deadly when the elders have to make good on an ancient pact with a spirit of an ancestor. Now, it's this generation's turn to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is their duty and their destiny, but they won’t give up without a fight to survive.

My Thoughts:Odd but creepy occult horror.
Review:"The Inheritance" can be looked upon as silly or smart. Depending on your point of view. The film is a rare 98%-black-american casted horror flick, dealing with occult overtones. But also tied in with African spiritual stuff. The film follows a group of relatives who gather at the estate of their relatives, who they call "The Elders", for a family reunion. A reunion which, as the only two white people in the movie point out at the beginning...is "in the winter" time.
An obvious nod to the fact that black people prefer warm, climate reunions in places like Florida. Instead of cold, snowy ones at an estate located in the mountains. But this "reunion" is actually a planned sacrifice. And those invited must figure out the family "tradition" and "secret"...before they're next to be sacrificed. "The Inheritance" atleast takes a stab at being an original occult horror film. Problem is, it doesn't quite attempt to scare the viewer...as much as it tries to disturb them psychologically.
That...and the origins of the films ghostly villain, Shakabazz...are a bit cliche in certain terms. But the movie still manages to work past most of it's flaws with a talented cast of season black-actor vets. Including DB Woodside (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Keith David (Chain Letter), Rochelle Aytes (Trick R' Treat), and Golden Brooks (CSI:Miami). So the movie is very well carried by performances and very tense and suspenseful moments of character dialogue, reactions, etc. Seems the films writer/director Robert O'Hara...wanted this movie to be driven more by it's actors and acting talent.
Instead of the quote unquote..."HORROR" elements. That's not to say the film isn't horrific though. Because it most certainly is. We get creepy chants, spirits appearing out of fire, ominous messages scribbled on windows in blood, and what occult horror wouldbe complete without some hot chick being impregnated with an evil spawn? So while O'Hara certainly wanted to put the actors involved, talents on display...he certainly also knows the sub-genre of occult horror and it's in's and out's.
There aren't many standout moments in "The Inheritance"...but the movie manages to string together a series of good scenes. Particularly it's third act, where the remaining relatives figure out what their creepy uncle and the other elders are up to...and try to escape before it's too late. This sets the scene for a nighttime creepfest, where the films scariest, and most disturbing moments are played out. All within the confines of a snowbound woods. Another horror movie steeple by the way.
The films final 10 minutes are very intense though. And are high on psychological scares, intense plot twists, and tense moments. The film is certainly an interesting experiment in ethnic horror, and a pretty enjoyable one also. Although I felt the movie could've used a teenager or two...it's cast of young adults, and oldder actors still worked pretty well nonetheless. And it's avoidance of the typical horror movie cliches...and the tweaking of others...makes it a decent watch indeed.
"The Inheritance" might not contain enough blood, gore, and carnage for those folks into heavy violent/graphic horror...but for people looking for occult horror, with a racial twist, some mature actors in a more mature situation, and some creepy psychological scares and tense moments..."The Inheritance" is one you should check out!
Positives:Good performances by Brooks, David, Woodside, and Aytes as Lily. A terrific finale. Very psychologically disturbing moments all over the place. Especially at the end. As well as a suspenseful and intense third act. The attempted avoidance of too many genre cliches was also refreshing.
Negatives:Need a few teens to connect more with the genre, and maybe more scares near the start of the movie.
Overall:Three stars out of four.
