[The Devil's Playground]
Plot:London: The not too distant future. Newgen Industries, a leading pharmaceutical company company, is trying to placate a media uproar. Its new "legal performance enhancer", RAK-295, has met with spectacular failure during testing, causing severe physical and allergic reactions in all 30,000 of its test subjects.
Allergic reactions in all but one user...Angela Mills. Angela is pregnant and is making arrangements for own leave of absence from a city full of woe and bad memories for her. With Angela being the only person not to report any type of reaction to Newgen, Dr. Brooke (Head of Newgen) understands that Angela may hold the key to solving this disaster and enlists Cole, the head of security to find her and bring her in for examination. But Cole, a hardened ex-mercenary, has just handed in his resignation to Peter White, the CEO of the company.
Why? He wants out - the undercover violent and murderous job of solving problems 'off the record' has started to weigh heavy on his conscience. His timing couldn't be worse. A violent outbreak of a RAK-295 test subject at Newgen's labs reveals that the drug has far, far more catastrophic consequences then either Brooke, White or Cole could imagine.
The drug reacts with extreme volatility in the subject, taking over their physiology and mental faculties, and causing accelerated and highly advanced muscular improvement, where that person becomes incredibly fast, incredibly agile, and incredibly ferocious - effectively that person ceases to be who they once were and instead are now these crazed and enraged beings. What's more, not only does it make them impervious to pain, the drug carries a vicious contagion - one bite and the victim 'turns' too. The outbreak claims Brooke and Peter White and during the struggle Cole is bitten - his fate sealed. Or is it?

My Thoughts:Generic British zombie horror.
Review:"The Devil's Playground" seems to be a movie that has a lot of things on it's proverbial mind. It wants to be "Resident Evil" on some level, but on another level...it also wants to be "28 Days Later". Although at times, it's not exactly sure which one it wants to be. And at other times, it's both. The film begins when one of those A-typical and interchangeable shadowy corporations, that you always see in viral outbreak movies...creates a new product.
A supposedly "legal" performance enhancer that can be taken in pill form. Unfortunately RAK-295 has failed many tests, 30,000 in fact. And the human guinea pigs have all had horrible reactions to it. But one person named Angela Mills, has managed to go through the trials with little to no effect. When the test subjects, being housed on site escape, a zombie outbreak begins as they start attacking people outside the lab. Now the shady Mr. White (Samon), is dead set on finding Angela, to get the key to solving the outbreak.
He hires Cole (Fairbrass), to perform this task. Cole has been doing tasks for Mr. White for quite some time. Like "cleaning up the books", and getting rid of people who might be a threat to exposing the company. But Cole is tired of the hired-gun title, and has just resigned from his post after finding out a few secrets of his own about his employers. But Cole eventually gets dragged into this against his will, as he suddenly grows a conscience, and also is bitten when the infected test subjects escape. And sees Angela as the way to not only stop the outbreak and save himself, but a way to square away all of the evil he himself has done at the behest of his ex-employers.
"The Devil's Playground" is a good film, from the point of view of adding a slightly new twist on the typical zombie outbreak story by making the culprit a legal performance enhancer. Especially in a world where many people are always looking for some sort of edge over their competition. Especially in sports. It kind of ties into real life actually. But the movie leaves it's creative juices at the door once it starts patterning itself after films like "Resident Evil" and "28 Days Later".
This is obvious while watching the film to any viewer with a pair of actual eyes. The movie makes no bones about taking elements from both movies with the running zombies, and the whole evil corporation/laboratory/one girl is mankind's only hope subplots. Not to mention this is a British production, and the "28 Days" films and the "Resident Evil" movies both have huge ties to Britain with production companies, actors, and directors. It seems that the movie atleast to me, could've been better served in doing it's own thing with the story.
Rather than trying to homage or interject other past and previous zombie movies into it's overall story. I always look for something original in zombie movies. Especially these days. Any director who can achieve an original zombie movie in a day and age where almost everything has been done with zombies and zombie movies, deserves much kudos. This movie though despite it's generic story, only about 10% of which manages to be original enough to satisfy...atleast offers up some good actors and performances.
Colin Samon plays the cold, calculating, soul-lacking corporate guy well enough for the little bit of time he gets on screen. Fairbrass as the ex mercenary turned hero is likeable at times, and makes an interesting bad guy turned hero turned anti-hero type. The films leading ladies, Myanna Buring as Angela, and others do a decent enough job in their roles also. As for the blood and gore levels, for a movie like this they're suitable but could've been pushed more to the brink to really ratchet up the seriousness of the situation the characters were involved in.
I felt that the entire of London was tossed into chaos by this outbreak, but the movie could've really pushed that point a little more than they did. The story however as far as writing and strength are concerned, does manage to stay intact for the duration of the movie. And the ending although slightly abrupt, fits nicely into the movies overall architecture and plot structure.
"The Devil's Playground" don't get me wrong, is a very generic zombie movie that borrows from other post-apocalyptic zombie/outbreak/viral disaster horror films. Set in England or otherwise. But it does have some positive elements that fans of this genre and it's sub-categories should enjoy very much. It just needed to be more original, and take more risks with how it played out it's story.
Positives:Good story, good performances, and a nice idea for a movie.
Negatives:The story, although strong...borrows too many elements from other zombie/outbreak type movies. The overtones of panic and chaos should've also been heightened more throughout the movie.
Overall:Two stars out of four.
