[The Bleeding]
Plot:Shawn Black (Matthias) knows pain. His parents and brother were killed in front of him. Beaten, bloodied and left for dead by a gang of ruthless vampires led by the charismatic Cain (Jones) and his lethal lieutenant Vanya (Kat Von D). But like his would-be murderers, Shawn has come back from the brink of death to take his revenge. He soon comes upon Reverend Roy (Madsen), who reveals to Shawn his calling as a "slayer," the only human capable of truly destroying vampires. Dark, brooding and with a palpable layer of cowboy justice, The Bleeding spins a tale of otherworldly influences running headlong into the very human thirst for revenge. Redemption comes with a heavy, and bloody, price in The Bleeding.

Cast:Vinnie Jones, Michael Matthias, Michael Madsen, DMX, Armand Assante, William McNamara, Pittsburgh Slim, Rachelle Leah, Kat Von D.

My Thoughts:Action-packed good fun!

Review:"The Bleeding" comes to home disc as the latest vampire movie to be infused with the latest straight-to-dvd action movie. All the usual stuff is here. Gun-play in heavy fashion, hot girls, vampires with euro-trash accents, lots of hand-to-hand combat, and of course those catchy one-liners. But atleast this film also knows how to have fun with it's overall absurdity. And hey, it's not in any way related to "Twilight". Always a plus. The movie follows a man named Shawn Black (Mathias).

An ex-army ranger, who lost his brother Cain to a pack of Bloodsuckers. Now...Cain is their leader, and Shawn seeks retribution and vengeance. As well as an opportunity to save his brother. And if he can't...he's ready to put him down. To do this, Shawn enlists the help of a few rag taggers. Including a guy named Tag (DMX), and a friend of Tag's...a down-and-out priest (Madsen). But this battle will prove a lot more perilous than Shawn expects, and he'll have to push himself to new limits if he wants to stop an ancient vampire prophecy, which could destroy humankind as we know it.

Sure it's, cheesy, and very late-night-on-Cinemax'ish, but "The Bleeding" works because it's entertaining for it's genre. A genre called "the straight-to-dvd-vampire-movie-of-the-week". Every week, or every other week...a new vampire movie hits DVD. "The Bleeding" is now that movie, and once it comes out...another movie will be..."that movie". But "The Bleeding" doesn't have obnoxious characters in spades, terrible dialogue, or any of that other stuff. Sure, the characters are cliche, and can sometimes be annoying (for example...the two young ladies in the movie who ignore all of the bad signs round them, just so they can attend a party at Club Mortem, an easy-to-spot vampire trap).

But other than those few hiccups...the film works. And as long as you don't go in expecting anything from Bela Lugosi, or even Tarantino's ''From Dusk Till Dawn"...you should enjoy it as well. The cast is a mixed bag, from veteran actors like Madsen, who always seem to find their way into films like this. To rapper-turned-actor-a-long-time-ago...DMX. And of course, Michael Matthias, who has made a name for himself on the indie movie front. Reality show star Kat Von D also makes an appearance. The acting in "The Bleeding" is actually quite good. And that helps to elevate a movie which could've fallen flat if the actors seemed like they were just in it for the check.

Whether they were or not, I don't know. But...making it not seem that way is key in any indie production like this one. The vampires are the typical modern-day-vamps. They sport top hats, canes, fancy cars, black coats, etc. Their look works though, and has a cool tinge to it somewhat. Atleast they don't cross over into that realm of the "Gap Ad Vampire"...who we see in just about every vampire film these days. And they're all adults seemingly, as are the good guys in the movie. I think this film worked mostly because the characters are over 25's.

Not under 18's. That made the dialogue, action, and on-screne chemistry more adult-inspired and oriented. Hence making the final product more tolerable of a viewing experience. The gun-play in the movie, as well as the other action...is pretty well choreographed, and filmed. In fact...the directing in this movie is really good. It has a comic book tone to it. And the scenes in the DVD transfer aren't overly dark, or filmed from bizarre and hard-to-pin-down angles.

The film also uses the beginning-to-end method of storytelling, starting it's opening scene with the films finale. And then backtracking to tell the whole middle part of the story from there. Nice idea. The films climax gets a bit choppy though. The action isn't nearly as clean in the final 10 minutes, and some of the dialogue falls off. But beyond that...the film comes to a nice conclusion. Overall, if you like high-octane vampire movies, indie horror, and lots of blood, girls, and gun-play...then check out "The Bleeding"! Is what I'd say.

Positives:Good directing, good casting, and likeable characters on the protagonists side of things. Decent vampire villains, and 85% of the action scenes are well done.

Negatives:Some of the characters can be too cliche at times. Especially Madsen and the two party girls. The final 10 minutes gets somewhat sloppy with dialogue and action sequences.

Overall:Two and a half stars out of four.
