"Styx and Stone" is Bluewater's latest genre offering in the realm of the comic book universe. It follows a detective named Mel Stone, who upon returning from South Africa, was found nearly decased aboard a cargo ship. He had nor does he now have, any recollection as to what happened to him. After the incident, he was put on leave from the force. Now, he's back on the job...but there's a slight problem. He's sharing his body with a murderous criminal named James Wyatt. All of this is what Stone has to deal with, as a string of gruesome college campus murders begin to occur. With victims having their eyes removed prior to their death. Stone must now investigate these murders, with his new female partner. And at the same time, keep Wyatt bottled up long enough to sort out his own inner demons. |
The first issues is a very strong showing, and is another step in the right direction for Bluewater. Although I am not sure how far this particular comic will go, I think its first issue is definitely a good starting point for what could be. The story already has enough dark and sinister elements with the possession, supernatural, and serial killer angles...to be a strong genre offering in the near future. The story is slightly choppy at times, and at other times...it can break away from it's better moments too early and too often. But what makes up for all of that, is the ambition which the comic shows in only its first issue.
The story is very ambitious, and shows a lot of promise and confidence in what it is trying to convey. The characters are the typical grizzled urban types, with the exception of the one female character in the series, thus far anyways. And the comic fits into a certain niche genre, but at the same time makes up it's own rules so to speak, by presenting a story which lets the reader come up with his or her own ideas as to what's happening. Instead of giving up the whole story and backstory in the first issue, and then trying to expand it with future issues. Add to that, the first issue ends on a cliffhanger "to be continued" note, and it seems the best is yet to come with "Styx and Stone". "Styx and Stone", is certainly one of Bluewater's January 2011 releases to keep an eye on.
