[Spiderhole]
Plot:Four young art-school students decide to squat at a large, boarded-up empty London house. They break in at night and change the locks before drinking, having sex, etc. In the morning, feeling sick-but more than just hung over-they go to leave, only to find that the doors and windows have been sealed with metal and that there is no escape.

My Thoughts:Another one of "those" kinds of movies.
Review:"Spiderhole" is a British horror offering where a group of young art students, are looking for a new place to squat. They find a place in a dilapidated old building. Once there, they christen the place with the usual celebration involving booze and no-strings-attached "relations". But the trouble for these highly-irresponsible young people comes when they awaken in the morning. Not only have they seemingly been drugged, but all entrances in and out of the house have been bolted and or boarded up.
The question now becomes...who's done this? And why? "Spiderhole" falls squarely into the torture/horror genre. The film tries to be smart and clever somewhat, by setting up a unique scenario of young squatters/artists being the victims of someone or something evil. But slowly, and surely...the layers of mystery and intrigue surrounding this movie are peeled back. And I for one didn't like what I saw once that happened. The film then turns into a flick heavily influenced by "Saw", "Hostel", and films of that nature.
The culprit is soon revealed, but that revelation just ends up being good for a laugh. And actually, I am surprised I didn't see it coming. Because it's quite the predictable twist. And the culprits motives, and background are even more chuckle-worthy. It's a shame because a film like this had all of the elements of a good horror movie. Claustrophobia, darkness, things that go "bump". All of that. Also any horror film set in a dilapidated building usually manages to create a sense of tension and terror. Without having to go all out on expensive set pieces.
But "Spiderhole" begins it's descent into epic fail when it reveals it's villain, and then starts filling film time with scenes of torture such as cutting-into-flesh with shapr objects, needles, etc. The movie becomes a mad doctor romp, with a doctor who's quite mad...but not very scary at all. But...I give the film credit for sneaking that past me. I expected the villain to be a crazy hobo, random lunatic, or an angry classmate. Out for revenge against these kids for messing with him/her one time too many. Hell, maybe even an art hater and or critic.
But a mad doctor, surgical mask, scrubs and all? That was a shock. Problem is, once the doc makes his first appearance into the movie, his presence is not intimidating nor scary. And the film takes the route of "Capitivity"...with scenes of torture, screaming, pleading, etc. This formula has gotten old, boring, and stale. Films like these need to be kept fresh with some new twists, and turns. But "Spiderhole" makes the kids victims of the worst kind. As in easy to prey on, unsuspecting, just pretty much at the mercy of this guy.
I mean for gods sake, throwing in the obligatory grizzled cop searching for the nutty doctor before he retires from the job, would've atleast added some balance to the picture. But this film chooses to just allow it's teen characters to be used, abused, and the villain has his way with them pretty much. The movie doesn't make itself fun enough either. No chase sequences, moments of suspense, or anything along those lines are present here. Just people being snatched away into the darkness, and then being tortured later on.
And as for the doctor, he's not necessarily a huge guy. In fact, I think Dr. Giggles probably out-muscled this particular doctor. But then again, considering the characters were scrawny-ish art students, I guess even a doctor in his mid 50's could have his way in kidnapping them to his evil doctor lair, where he experiments on them. Which by the way, is never explained but only via some newspaper clippings late in act 3. As to why the doctor is doing all of this crazy stuff.
"Spiderhole" is a film that just can never get it's act together. Despite a nice set up. It's a slasher movie persay. But it also dabbles in torture-horror elements. And even a dash of attempted supernatural elements. But one thing that it isn't...is original. And you can also add not fun, entertaining, or interesting to the list. It's truly a dry horror film, with a dry and boring approach to everything it tries to do. And when you throw in the sorely lacking character development, you've got a real loser here folks.
Positives:Nice set up at the start, with the creepy old building. And the darkness within it.
Negatives:The film can never utilize what it has to it's advantage. Character development is lacking. As are all of the vital elements which make a horror movie worth watching for 90 minutes. It felt like such an empty film. And the ending was abrupt and tacky.
Overall:One star out of four.
