[Scream Of The Banshee]
Plot:When a college Professor opens up a strange, ornate box discovered in the basement of a University, she and her students hear a horrifying scream belonging to a bloodthirsty banshee. They're relieved when it stops, but that scream insidiously begins to haunt all that heard it in strange and surreal ways. At first dismissing the Irish folklore that if you hear a Banshee scream, you will die, they discover soon find the folklore is truer than they could have imagined, as the starts taking their lives.

My Thoughts:Lackluster monster flick.
Review:"Scream Of The Banshee" from After Dark Originals, and SyFy...is a monster movie using the mythological banshee character, as a catalyst for it's monstrous villain. The film follows the creature with an ear-piercing shriek as it's captured, and then ends up in the basement of a university. Well...it's head does atleast. Locked inside of a special box. A college professor, and a few of her students open the box.
Upon finding the severed head of the grotesque-looking she-demon...inside the box, the banshee then lets out a blood-curdling shriek. After which the head ashes away, and thus...her spirit is now free to torment a whole new group of people. But don't let such a good set up for a story fool ya. This film is definitely predictable. For example, the first character to die is the university's black security guard. Which nails two horror film stereotypes into one box. The black guy dies first, and furthermore...how many times have we seen the security guard in a horror film get wacked first?
More than 100 for sure. So setting a tone like that at the beginning of the film, doesn't bode very well for "SOTB". It gets even worse from there. As the banshee stalks the professor played by Lauren Holly, and her students in dreams and flashes. Before it eventually begins to hunt them down and kill them. Which it waits until late in act three to do. Because after all, this film only has like 4 main characters, so they can't really slaughter too many people before the final act huh? The movie does try to be a tad bit deeper than the usual indie monster movie though.
By throwing in some teen angst moments where the professor and her daughter have an argument over her father/the professors late husband, and that whole relationship...and how her mother doesn't approve of her boyfriend. But in reality, those attempts are paper thin because the angsty teen and suburban soccer mom thing is done in almost every ABC Family or Nickleodeon show ever made, past, present, and future. But the scene is well-performed, so it gets a few points from me. I also liked the banshee creature.
Which was extremely gross-looking and haggard. I am not certain what a banshee is supposed to look like, but I think the filmmakers got the monster looked nailed down pretty damn well in this movie. The problem is with how the banshee's curse works. Apparently, she screams people into ear-bleeding submission. But cannot kill them until they scream as a reaction to her screams. So the writers pretty much ripped off the central cog to how Mary Shaw from "Dead Silence" operates.
A character who couldn't claim a new victim unless they screamed at the very sight of her. The same rule applies here with the banshee. The banshee can also possess people, but the writers don't work out the kinks of how the possession necessarily works enough, for you to get a clear enough idea of what to look for at certain moments in the movie. This really breaks the film down into just being another cheesy SyFy Saturday night creature feature. With no elements that make it rise above being anything but.
And for After Dark, this is another disaster in bad filmmaking. The movie is slightly ambitious, and has a good story to draw from. But the writer/director just drops the ball too many times. Almost as if they were afraid to make the movie too good. And decided to "mail it in" so to speak. The Lance Henriksen cameo from time to time in the movie, can't even save "Scream Of The Banshee" from being anything more than a hazard-ridden creature feature with all kinds of story and character issues.
It seems to me that if they had taken their time to craft this movie a bit better, I would've liked it more. Instead, it felt like a rush job mixed with some quasi-lazy writing and a severe lack of direction. The creature fx were about the only thing they got right in this one.
Positives:The Banshee looked terrific. It looked rotted, gross, and scaly. A real "date from hell" look, so to speak. The story idea also held potential. Some of Lance Henriksen's moments in the movie were pretty comical.
Negatives:The story is put together poorly. As if it was held together by scotch tape and maple syrup. Not enough characters to ensure a high body count. Not enough blood and gore, and the entertainment value is sadly offset by the sheer predictable tone and nature, of the movie.
Overall:One star out of four.
