[Savage County]
Plot:Set on the last weekend before prom, where a mismatched group of high school kids heads to a remote pond to drink beer and hang out. When the beer runs dry, the conversation turns to daring Patrick, the runt of the group, into knocking on the door of the Hardells - the reclusive family that owns the land the pond is on. Patrick takes up the dare, knocks on the Hardells' door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a shotgun.
When Patrick's friends come to his defense, the oldest Hardell is killed in the shuffle. Scared and guilty - the teens flee the crime. When the rest of the Hardell clan finds the old man murdered, they seek out vengeance. One-by-one, the teens are hunted down by Orry, the sexually oppressed mute, Willard, the long-haired wildman, and Kasper, the cold-blooded family leader.

My Thoughts:"Texas Chain Saw Massacre" called...they want their movie back.
Review:"Savage County", is MTV's second try at horror. After a successful first attempt, which was "My Super Psycho Sweet 16". "Savage County" however does not sport the same imagination or entertainment value as it's slasher predecessor. The movie follows a group of kids in a small Texas town. Their lives pretty much suck, but the one source of happiness for them is soon to be graduating high school. Upon which most of them plan to head off to better surroundings like California and New York. But not before they hang out at the local lake, and have some fun. But one of them gets the genius idea to go up to a dilapidated-looking house in the hills, where the local hillbilly's live.
Their plan? Basically scope the place out and knock on the door as part of a dare. Of course things, like they normally do in these sorts of movies, take a turn for the worse when the eldest of the houses residents comes out brandishing a shotgun. He opens fire on the kids, and one member of the group...who is the star running back of the football team also, has to take the geezer down via a shovel-shot to the head. The blow proves fatal, the old man croaks on the spot. And the kids decide..."fuck it, lets bail and not tell anyone".
Things then break down into an "I Know What You Did Last Summer" type of scenario where there's a back-and-forth discussion about doing "the right thing". But seeing as how the old man was just a local redneck, and tried to bust a cap in their asses, majority rules to just get outta dodge and pretend it never happened. Of course the rednecks family members/kin then show up, and they are not pleased. Which is bad news for the already-AWOL teens. And if you're guessing that hillbilly-southern-fried revenge follows all of this, then you win a cookie...hypothetically anyways. Which is exactly the problem with "Savage County".
I really cannot believe MTV would even put their name on this crap. Granted, "My Super Psycho Sweet 16"...their first foree into horror, wasn't A+++ perfect. But damn, it was atleast a three star campy-slasher flick. "Savage County" isn't even a one star slasher flick. No scratch that, not even worthy of half of a friggin star! This film is a disaster from start to finish. Has no redeeming qualities, no interesting characters, no likeable characters or aspects, and on top of all of that...it's super boring! One has to wonder what the hell the director and writer were thinking.
I've seen the exploits of drunken hobos on the NYC subway that classify as better horror than this so called..."movie". The film plays out in typical, cliche, and lame fashion also. The entire town is stocked full of "friendlys", people who you think are gonna be the kids saving grace. But then turn out to be working with the crazy rednecks in their crazy torture games, which they spring upon these kids for killing their "grampa". And that's pretty much how the film goes.
The kids are abducted, tied up, and tortured one by one. Killed, maimed, etc. But the movie tries to somehow redeem itself by not showing and participating in too much full-on gore. Which basically means, quick cut-aways, suggested violence, etc. Yep, this movie tries to hard to be like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Yet, it seems to forget the golden rule of that film. Which was shell-shocking blood, gore, violence, and horror. "Savage County" waters itself down to nothing more than a cautionary tale about kids learning a rough lesson about screwing with the local white trash.
And I think anyone in their right mind in 2011, knows not to bother the crazies who live on the edge of town. We learned this lesson in so many movies before this. Far better movies than "Savage County". Far better horror movies, than "Savage County". So when the latest slasher flick tries to give us a cautionary tale that reads, "Beware Of Hillbillies"...I think most of us already have gotten the message. Way back when Tobe Hooper did it. And did it better.
Granted, these kids weren't super-obnoxious, but one-dimensional characters? Hell yes. Boring characters? Hell yes again! But atleast they were tolerable in their acting as lams soon to be slaughtered by a family of pissed off inbreds. But in the end all be all, "Savage County" is a ton of movies rolled into one. It tries to be "Texas Chain Saw Massacre". Then tries to be "House Of 100 Corpses" during those moments when it's not trying to be "TCM". And because it tries to be so many other things...instead of trying to be itself, it just winds up as an epic, fail.
"Savage County" is savagely bad, savagely boring, and savagely disappointing. If these kids never have acting careers after this...I think we'll all know what film choke out their careers in Hollywood before they even began. And as for MTV, might wanna stop slapping your name on any horror film that comes across your desk.
You were 1 and 0 before "Savage County". Now...you're 1 and 1 when it comes to horror films. And not even a good 1 and 1. Because "County" is so far at the other end of the spectrum compared to what "My Super Psycho Sweet 16" was, that it's like going from listening to a James Brown record, to then proceeding to throw on a Jessica Simpson CD. Avoid ''Savage County" at ALL costs.
Positives:When the end credits rolled.
Negatives:A piss poor script, a piss poor story, badly-one-dimensional characters, and horrible homages (or attempted rip-offs, your choice), to previous southern-fried slasher films of the genre.
Overall:No stars out of four.
