Horror movies &stuff Interviews Marianne star Sandra Larsson
HM&S.com got an opportunity recently to talk with European actress Sandra Larsson! Star of Director Filip Tegstedt's upcoming supernatural horror pic "Marianne"! Larsson plays Sandra in the film, which is a psychological horror movie about a broken family in the small isolated town of Ostersund, located up in the Swedish northlands. Among the pine woods, the lakes, the snowy mountains and the midnight summer sun, the story takes place on the fuzzy border where fantasy and reality meet. 45 year old Krister's wife Eva has just passed away in a car accident, and now he's alone with the 18 year old daughter Sandra who hates his guts, and a 6 months old daughter who he doesn't really know how to take care of. At night he's haunted by bad nightmares about what happened the night Eva died, and guilt for the pain he's caused Sandra over the years as an absent father. He experiences visits in his sleep from a woman dressed in green, looking for revenge.
Someone who comes to him via his dreams. Someone he knows already is dead. Sandra's boyfriend, who's interested in old Swedish folklore, soon realizes Krister is haunted by a Mare - a female creature of the night or a woman possessed. He tries to guide Krister by helping him get rid of her, while Krister tries to regain his family and reestablish some sort of order in his life. But having a bad reputation in a small town makes it hard to regain the trust of someone you've let down so many times before. Krister finds himself in a jungle of guilt and anxiety, superstition and nightmares, mental and physical illness, and has to find the best way out. Is the Mare real, or only in his mind?
MR. H:Tell us about your character Sandra in the movie. What role does she play in this supernatural tale?
Sandra:Sandra is the doubter. The character is important in that way, that you may see the story from two different angles. She is a teenage girl, her father doesn't care for anything but himself, she doesn't have any friends really, her boyfriend is a weirdo... She feels alone, she is alone.
MR. H:What about "Marianne" made you feel that it was a project that you wanted to be a part of?
Sandra:I liked the intrigues between the characters. The story is a puzzle that slowly reveals itself to the viewer. All characters are incredibly complex, the script is well written, it is a movie where you should be aware. One of those films that you can see several times and each time you catch yourself be fascinated and think: "Ahaa!".
MR. H:Have you worked with any of the actors, or the director Filip T., before, prior to "Marianne"?
Sandra:No, but I'm looking forward to work with everyone again! It would be very nice with a "Marianne-The Return"!
MR. H:As a European actress...do you find horror movies to be just silly popcorn fun? Or do they hold a moderately important place in modern day cinema?
Sandra:Oh, I love horror movies! It's my favorite genre! Horror always works, it doesn't matter what mood you're in, the effect will always be the same. And they are great to watch on a date, then you can hold hands.
MR. H:European horror films seem to have a more classical tinge to them than American horror movies. Which are far more crass and in-your-face with the blood, guts, and stuff. Is that a good thing or a bad thing in your eyes?
Sandra:I like different kind of horror movies, the key is to have a good story and how you are telling it, then if you do it with the blood and guts stuff or the psychical way doesn't matter to me. But you will always need tension and unpleasant Music.
MR. H:As a European actress, do you find that roles for women in European horror films, are far more respectable and have more meat on them? Than the roles for women in American horror movies, which are pretty much just eye candy roles 6 times out of 10?
Sandra:There may be some truth in what you say ... I think all actors want to have exciting and challenging roles, otherwise the actors had been models instead.
MR. H:What European horror movies have you seen recently that you've really enjoyed?
Sandra:A few weeks ago I saw a fantastic horror movie called "Marianne"! I can really recommend it!
MR. H:What demographic do you say or think "Marianne" targets more? The 14 to 21 horror/thriller viewer? Or the more adult 18 to 35 demo?
Sandra:I think it's more adult because of the complicated story. As young you like more blood and guts I think.
MR. H:Who are some of your favorite American horror actors?
Sandra:Robert DeNiro is doing a fantastic role in "Hide and seek". Anthony Hopkins is also a favorite.
MR. H:Who are some of your favorite European horror actors?
Sandra:Sean Bean!
MR. H:What do you think makes for a strong female character in a horror film? Strong and sexy? Cold and calculating, yet vulnerable at times? Smart, intelligent, and sexy? Flat out unshakeable and tough? Or a mix of all of the elements? And does Sandra fit any or all of these descriptions?
Sandra:I think they all describe Sandra in a way. It's hard to say what makes a strong female character, I have to be boring and say: It depends on the movie!
End.
