[Red Riding Hood]
Plot:Valerie, a beautiful young woman, is torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf.
But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. As panic grips the town, Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast--one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect...and bait.

Review:"Red Riding Hood" is the latest horror film to star rising starlet Amanda Seyfried. WHo is quickly carving out her spot in the horror genre as the normal-looking horror film heroine. Who isn't ugly, but isn't so hot and superficial looking, that she turns off her target audience entirely because they feel they can't relate to her. Although this movie isn't as much horror as her last film, "Jennifer's Body".
It still falls into the category based on it's story. The film is set in a village which sits on the edge of a dark forest. The people in the village have an uneasy truce with a dark beast, which lives within the woods. It's a wolf. Not a werewolf as some people have come to believe about this film. But being that it's a Catherine Hardwicke film, she brings her trademark "giant wolves"...over with her from the "Twilight" series. Only this wolf can speak, and seems to be a clever character. Outsmarting the villages hunting squads, and managing to pick off villagers one, after the other.
But it wasn't supposed to be this way. And it wasn't always this way. The village had an uneasy truce with the wolf. A truce where they gave him small animals such as pigs and rabbits. To feed on. In exchange, the wolf didn't harm a single human villager for food. But...like wolves naturally do. He eventually betrayed his deal, and killed a villager. Now, the villages protector's want revenge. And are in all out war with the wolf. Wanting to capture and kill him. In the midst of all of this, is Valerie (Seyfried), who's in love with Peter (Fernandez). Even despite her mother's (Madsen) protests.
But can their love survive the wolfs deadly attacks, and the ever-growing paranoia surrounding the villages inhabitants? After all...one of them IS the wolf. And it could be anyone. This film works and fails on various levels. Seyfried's performance makes it work. The terrific directing, sceneries, and scoring all combine to make it work. But it's failures are based on not being genuinely scary, and hardly ever entertaining or intriguing. The characters come off as very flat. Even Seyfried as Valerie at times. And there are many times where the movie is just too sappy for it's own good.
Then there's the wolf. Granted, scarier than the wolves seen in the "Twilight" films. But I was hoping for a full-fledged werewolf. Instead, this film gives us a giant wolf. Like a wolf you'd see in the woods of the midwest somewhere. Only about 8 times as big. And it can talk. Which is one of the films better scenes. When the wolf actually starts making demands and has his/its sights set on Valerie for some reason. But this is exactly the films problem. It never players up it's key mystery well enough. The mystery element here is "who"...among the villagers is the wolf? Who is a human with the heart and soul of a bloodthirsty, carnivorous beast? This mystery is never played up strongly enough.
It should've been done in slasher movie fashion. Where many suspects/red herrings are strewn about the film. Always making one think the wolf could be anyone. But instead, we're left to believe just one person is the wolf throughout the entire movie. Problem is, we all know that person being the wolf would kill the movies big twist. Because the predictability factor would be way too high. So we then know the wolf has to be someone else. But beyond Gary Oldman as the leader of the villages protectors/wolf hunters...none of these characters are very intriguing. So in some areas.
We stop caring who the wolf is at all. Because following most of these characters for 90 minutes isn't very much fun. So the film kind of loses steam once it hits you with a cool and sleek 5 minute or so opening sequence. But the movie isn't HORRIBLE. It has good scoring, directing, sceneries, etc...like I said. It's just that it lacks edge. The characters are dull and lifeless. The film never has a moment where any of the characters step out of character and do something shocking or surprising. It's too bland at times, and lacks shock value at other times.
The film just needed some electricity to go along with it's visual strength. It's a very strong film visually, creating this world where a beast lurks in the dark backdrop of the local forest. But if the characters depth, had been as strong as the films crisp visuals...maybe it would've turned out to be a better film overall. "Red Riding Hood" manages to conclude on a modestly-decent note, with the ending being pretty strong and entertaining.
But the movie really needed some more character flare in the end. It just tries to wow you visually. Because it knows it's characters beyond Seyfried and Oldman are one big snooze and a half. And when you mix that with a lack of high entertainment value overall, this film barely makes the grade.
Positives:Crisp visuals, and excellent directing by Catherine Hardwicke. A good ending also.
Negatives:Unfortunately, the movies characters and entertainment value, aren't as powerful as it's visuals. Sadly.
Overall:Two stars out of four.
