[Rare Exports:A Christmas Tale]
Plot:In the depths of the Korvatunturi mountains, 486 metres deep, lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up! Way up north in Finland, right on the border with Russia, lies one of Santa Claus's ostensible homes. For the last couple of months an international team of "archaeologists," working for Subzero Inc. and led by a weird Brit (who bears an unsettling resemblance to the Nazi officer in Raiders of the Lost Ark), have been mysteriously digging away at a large hill, wreaking havoc on the environment.

The locals, mostly Samis and Laplanders, are furious. The annual reindeer round-up, which happens a few days before Christmas, has been ruined, dealing a devastating blow to the local economy. Especially annoyed is Rauno, a single father who's struggling to make ends meet and deal with his imaginative, physically underdeveloped son, Pietari. Though he doesn't totally fit in with the community, Pietari is insatiably curious and notices things that others don't. Specifically, he's realized that the dig is somehow related to Santa Claus, but this isn't exactly the Santa from animated Christmas specials or nineteenth-century American doggerel. He's a little harsher.

Cast:Per Christian Ellefsen, Tommi Korpela, Jorma Tommila, Jonathan Hutchings, Peeter Jakobi, Ilmari Jarvenpaa, Onni Tommila, Rauno Juvonen.

My Thoughts:"Rarely" makes any sense.

Review:"Rare Exports:A Christmas Tale", is European horror/fantasy at it's weirdest, strangest, and most bizarre. Jalmari Helander's film follows an archeological dig, which unearths the frozen corpse of the European version of Santa Claus. Once he's unerathed, and taken to a drophouse to be guarded by a single father and a few others. The father being in desperate need of cash, takes the job.

But soon...children begin to disappear in the area, and Santa's "helpers" come looking for him. Which is not a good thing. This film is not "horror" persay. But more like fantasy/dark fairytale with elements of horror. More along the lines of a "Nightwatch", the Russian film from Timur Bekmambetov. One of those dark, European fantasy/horror films. That isn't in the traditional U.S. mold of horror. The movie certainly takes all sorts of original and new liberties with the genre.

Creating an intriguing, and interesting story to keep the viewer interested. But the problem is, a story can only go so far. Before people start wondering when something good is actually "going to" happen. And that's how this movie shoots itself in the foot. It never allows anything good to happen. It keeps teasing a bloody, gory, and maybe violent finale. But it never delivers in any way, shape, or form.

The movie has a good base story to work with. It just never goes the horror route as it should. And although the characters are a mixed bag of weird, somewhat comical, and stoic...even that doesn't save this movie from hitting a creative wall. The director obviously chose not to go gory with this movie. But the film teases too much intrigue not to deliver in it's 1 hour and 20 minute run. It's just very strange when looking at this films clips, poster, and pics, and trailers...how it can just squander so much potential.

I think this movie could've really been a Euro-horror gem. Which strayed from the usual norms, and did something new, inventive, and different. Which it did. But the problem is, it adds nothing to that. It's like a fancy car with a great engine but no wheels. One can't exist without the other. This films story and plot direction is it's great engine. But because it doesn't do anything with that story, like adding any blood, gore, pure carnage or craziness, or anything to that plot...it pretty much sits on blocks for an hour and 20 minutes because it has no wheels to go anywhere worth mentioning.

Even down the gut of the movie, in which you expect something to finally go down, and make up for an otherwise lackluster 1st and 2nd act...you're just left disappointed and confused at the end. The movie really just aims to tell an anti-christmas Christmas story. And at the same time, play on the European incarnations of Santa Claus. But if you're looking for "Rare Exports" to be a pure horror film. That you can recommend to friends, family, or any other horror fan.

Not likely. This movie spends too much time, way too much time in fact. Acting like it's scared of it's own shadow. It never really does anything with the golden story that it has. And instead chooses to play it safe. A big mistake in my estimation.

Positives:Intriguing story idea, and a good script to work with as a base element. Good directing also captures the crisp, snowy/wintry atmosphere really well. And creates a nice feel to the movie.

Negatives:It just never really gets mean and nasty enough like a so-called horror/fantasy film should. It's always on the cusp of it though. But never takes that next step.

Overall:One and a half stars out of four.
