My Thoughts:An official "psyche out"!
Review:Eventually, one gets tired of movies that deliver the same old, same old. So is the case with Andrew Shortell's "Psych:9". A film where a troubled young woman takes a job organizing records at a local hospital. A hospital which is on the verge of closing up shop. Soon...she begins to have bizarre visions and encounters. Encounters which may or may not be linked to a local slasher nicknamed..."The Nighthawk".
One would think a film starring Michael Biehn and Cary Elwes, would deliver more than "Psych 9" did. But unfortunately...this movie just didn't deliver. Good cast or not. The film is shot well enough. Capturing a certain neon-grit-and-grime or urban squallor of sorts. It's in fact shot kind of like a "Saw" movie. But the comparisons between both movies stop there. "Psych:9" wastes it's time with red herrings, and weird characters who pop in and out of the story at random times.
The basic formula of the movie takes Sara Foster (D.E.B.S.), and makes her the prototypical...crazy/hot girl. That phrase means the attractive female lead, who's cracked in some way. Emotionally, mentally, spirtually, or two of the three. Or all of the above. Her character seems normal enough at the start though. But we all know based on the horror movie formula...she's gonna go or be driven insane at some point. So the movie decides to not make her character be haunted by any visions or demons. But instead gives her the obligatory "I had a bad childhood story".
And then makes things even more cliche by making the source of her bad childhood memories her mother and her father. As if one didn't see that coming. Just once...I'd like to see a film where the family dog, is the source of someones repressed childhood trauma. Anyways, she has managed to keep all of this under wraps, and even function in a marriage with her husband normally. But for some reason, this hospital, and the slasher that's on the loose...have both come together to reopen that pandora's box.
This film could've been exciting if it had played all of this right. But it takes the easy way out one time too many. With random scenes that seem to be stolen from hundreds of other ghost movies, and films where people see things that aren't really there. At some point...it all gets monotonous...and the viewing experience becomes a trial in patience...and the ability to keep from dozing off into an afternoon nap. Foster carries the film well enough, and her dark lockes traded in for her signature blonde ones...give her character a more gothic look.
But Foster isn't given much to do in this movie beyond the typical lead female in a straight-to-dvd fodder flick. The script never really asks her to step outside or act outside the box. Yet it seems that Foster as an actress is too talented for this movie. And wanted so badly to take her character to a whole nother, darker place. Yet...the script seems to constrain her. As it does Elwes, and a few others. Elwes plays a doctor at the hospital Foster's character works at.
He still has that certain creepy Dr. Gordon charm as this other doctor guy. But Elwes isn't asked to do much in this movie either. Beyond pop up at random moments and time where he conveniently scares the crap out of somebody. Who 9 times out of 10...turns out to be Foster's character. Meanwhile...the movie tries to juggle this "Nighthawk" slasher with it's sidestory of "hot-girl-continues-to-see-twisted-apparitions." But even that doesn't work out.
The movie really has a lot of good tools at it's disposal. But because it follows too many of the A-typical horror movie rules...it can never really spread it's wings and just be truly scary. So it settles for cheap thrills, and teases of even cheaper ones. The films does have a few big twists. But it telegraphs them too much in the middle of this 98 minute venture...that you have atleast two figured out before the big reveal. But it seems the director didn't care because he decides to throw in that obligatory "gotcha" ending.
That really doesn't operate as a "gotcha" ending. As much as it comes off as a "how many times have we seen this before?"...ending. "Psych:9" has all the tools to have been a pretty creepy and twisted film. But in the end, it seems either too afraid...or too lazy...to take the next step.
Positives:Good directing that captures the films story nicely. Decent performances by Foster, Elwes, and Biehn.
Negatives:Too many cliche moments. The story doesn't take enough risks, due to using too many rehashed scenes from past movies involving apparitions and hallucinations. Not a very smart ending either.
Overall:One and a half stars out of four.
