[Prowl]
Plot:Amber dreams of escaping her small town and persuades her friends to accompany her partment-hunting in the big city. When their transportation breaks down, Amber and friends gratefully accept a ride in the back of a semi.
But when the driver refuses to stop and they discover the cargo is cartons of blood, they panic. Soon, panic turns to terror when the truck disgorges into a dark, abandoned warehouse where blood-thirsty creatures learn to hunt human prey, which the friends realize is what they have now become.

My Thoughts:On the "prowl", for a better writer.
Review:"Prowl" was released with the slate of After Dark Original's films back in January. And is now available on DVD. Keep in mind though, "Prowl" was supposed to be accompanied by 7 other films. But by the time ADO's ad campaign began, and then ended...the slate of eight, had been cut down to a barely half that number. It seemed that ADO just wanted to release all the bad movies in one big wave. "Husk" rocked though. "51" and "Scream Of The Banshee"? Eh not so much. Now comes "Prowl"...from filmmaker Patrik Syversen.
The film tells the usual tale of a young, attractive woman named Amber, who just is not happy in her sucky little small town. She wants out. But it seems she just can't get a break. Between lack of money, lack of friends with available rides, and other issues...she's stuck there. Despite setting up a deal with a guy in Chicago who has an apartment waiting for her. All she needs now, is to get to Chicago. She eventually manages to gather up her friends, and make the journey via a vehicle. But the car breaks down during the trip. Another bad break for poor Amber. But hark!
What's that in the distance? Why it's a creepy, grizzled old redneck truck driver. Who's hauling..."something"...in the back of his truck to Chicago. Which means Amber and her friends are in luck because they're going to Chicago! At first though, the truck driver isn't keen on giving these kids a ride. But they manage to talk him into it. Particularly Amber, who shares her "my small town sucks and I wanna get the hell outta here" story...with the man. He then reciprocates his own..."my small town sucks and I wanna get outta here" story...with Amber. Only his begins with..."The small town I grew up in", and ends with..."sucked, and I got the hell out when I was a kid".
So since him and Amber share this common thread, he decides to give her and her buds a ride to Chicago. Unfortunately, the ride doesn't go very smoothly. Soon, the teens are dumped off into a dark, seemingly abandoned slaughterhouse in the middle of nowhere. And which obviously, is NOT...Chicago. But when bloodthirsty ghouls go on the attack against them, picking them off one by one in the darkness, their current location begins the least of their worries. "Prowl" works for a little bit.
It sets up an intriguing scenario by using the "truck drivers can't be trusted" cliche, followed by the equally cliche..."teens stranded at a dark spooky ranch" cliche. But the movie is not shot very well. Thus, considering most of it takes place in the darkened shadows of this far out slaughterhouse...it's hard to be able to see when the action starts to go down. Not to mention, what happens when Amber takes down one of the ghouls. Now if you were expecting "Prowl" to be this cool supernatural tale which harkens back to the 80's horror films, where a bunch of teens end up on the creepy farm of some nutcase.
Well...it carries strands of that genre. Problem is, it then takes a U-turn into "Vampire Diaries"/"Twilight"-ville later on. And as that happens, it's like watching a really expensive party balloon, deflate just as you've handed it off to the birthday girl. Talk about a movie that lures you into a false sense of security. "Prowl" didn't have much, because it didn't start out with much. But it had "something". And then it ruins that something by being lame, and trying to be mainstream. The films twist is just absolutely ludicrous. And these so-called "ghouls", have their intrigue and mystery killed by a half-assed story which doesn't explain much of anything.
You know a films bad when a mystery woman shows up to explain to the lead girl that she's not exactly "human"...and that the flesh-eating ghouls are her estranged "family". But apparently her family forgot to tell her that beforehand. I guess that sort of thing would ruin all of those Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holiday gatherings. Oh well, "Prowl" though does have one good scene. Too bad it comes way at the end though. But trust me, it's hilarious. As for the film itself. It is NOT hilarious.
In fact, if it were a joke it'd be a bad one. It sports a lot of blood, gore, and carnage. But nothing to back it up really expect a horribly spun story. The film tries to be "Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2003", then adds in a dash of "Twilight". Never a good mix. Nor is "Prowl" a good movie. Gotta wonder what the writers were thinking here. The film is so forgettable. So poorly written, and worst of all. Nonsensical. Other than a Bruce Payne sighting, this film has nada going for it. Best be on the "Prowl" for something else to rent next Saturday night.
Positives:The movie starts off well. First 15 minutes are good. Also there's that funny scene at the end where someone is eaten to death. Yes...I meant "eaten".
Negatives:A horrible story, and an even more horrible twist to the story. Also the cliches in this film were all over the place. And the "Twilight" influence was sadly and annoyingly, blatant.
Overall:One star out of four.
