My Thoughts:Sometimes intriguing, other times predictable.
Review:"Mother's Day" is the newest genre offering from filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman. The movie mixes horror elements, with thriller elements...as it remakes and tries to revitalize, the 80's Troma slasher flick. About a group of killers...who're influenced heavily by their mother's will. But "Mother's Day" 2011, doesn't take as many risks as it's 80's counterpart. Nor is it a full-blown slasher film. It's more people-drama meets horror. Think "Last House On The Left" 2009, meets an NBC soap-opera.
That's pretty much what this film is. The film kicks off with a baby-napping at a local hospital. Where the security guard who tries to retrieve the stolen baby from the mysterious female kidnapper...meets a gruesome end. Things then move to a suburban home, where a group of people are partying. That is until...a group of men burst into the scene. The guys are bank robbers, and Mother's (Rebecca DeMornay's) children. Things quickly escalate once the men start taking hostages, and rounding the up the houses new occupants. That's when Mother arrives, with her daughter (Ann Woll) in tow. She wants her house back, but is more interested in the money that is hidden within it.
But the houses new occupants clain to know nothing of the stashed cash. Thus...gruesome games begin to unfold. As Mother puts the heat on the youngin's, to make them give up the location of the money. "Mother's Day" is not as pure horror as it's predecessor from the 80's Troma treasure chest. But it contains a good cast, of noteable horror names. We have Lyriq Bent (Saw), AJ Cook (Ripper), Kandyse McClure (Children Of The Corn remake), Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine), Briana Evigan and Matt O'Leary (Sorority Row), and Andrew Bryniarski (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003). With all of this horror talent...you'd think you'd be in for a real..."scary movie".
But this is not the case in reality. The film isn't even scary from a human standpoint. Nor disturbing. "Last House On The Left" '09 wasn't as scary as the original...but it atleast had disturbing villains in Krug, Sadie, and Francis. Scary as they were monstrous human beings. "Mother's Day" though doesn't try to develop it's villains much beyond Rebecca DeMornay as "Mother"...who steals the show in a terrific performance. Her children are really just weak-minded puppets.
With all sorts of issues. Most of which are spawned from a plot twist that really isn't a twist, considering the movie begins by spoiling it. But in reality, Mother's children really don't strike fear into the heart of the viewer. They're really just screwed up hicks, who wave and wield guns to get their way. I guess when you're bank robbers for a living, you sort of have a way about threatening people with guns, and getting them to do what you want. Which is how the film spends most of it's hour and 50 minutes.
The children making threats towards their hostages, and the hostages caving in to their demands because they're all scared and not used to seeing real guns. Although one character does show some backbone in plotting to overthrow his and his friends captors...but since everyone else are a bunch of wusses...he kind of is on his own. Thus the best laid plains end up failing for the most part. But the movie just doesn't nurture it's people drama well enough. It tries to throw a few curve balls as things go on, such as someone deciding to make a run for it, and of course...the "secrets"...that the group of friends hold close to their hearts.
Secrets which "Mother"...using her mind tricks, manages to expose little by little. But haven't we seen this before? I did...in a little movie called "Kill Theory". A film where a group of young people are trapped in a house by an unseen maniac, and throughout the course of the ordeal...are forced to get 'real' with one another. Secrets come out, and that leads to much death, blood, and mayhem. All this while the evil killer lurks in the shadows, rubbing his hands together with an excited grin on his face. Seems lots of horror films are going the reality show method these days.
And "Mother's Day" is no different. The movie just sets in motion a scenario where everyone is happy, until some villain shows up and starts barking orders. Then the group falls apart as the pressure cooker situation causes them to mentally and emotionally unravel. Felt more like I was watching a terrorist interrogation at Guantanamo Bay, than an actual horror film persay. But I guess that was the films main goal. Portraying DeMornay's character as a hyper-manipulative villainess...who hids behind a sweet smile, and outwardly comforting manners.
She manipulates her children through force and talk in some cases...but manipulates others into revealing their true selves by using her children as the proverbial cattle prod, or electric taser...which shocks the target into submission. Ready to spill everything they know. Either way, the movie gets points for being somewhat clever, and for Rebecca DeMornay's performance. But the movie overall just lacks the gore, suspense, horror, and intensity of other films in it's vein, such as "Last House On The Left" 2009, and other movies like it.
"Mother's Day" redux does have a decent ending though. An ending which harkens all the way back to how things started. But when reflecting on the movie, as a whole...it's just another psycho-horror/thriller that sets up the good-looking young people-are-cracked-by-nutty-hostage-taking-villains scenario. It's been done before, only much better. "Mother's Day" doesn't do it well enough to set itself apart from the others. Nor...make a good name for itself. The movie has good acting in spots, but lacks cohesion and those ever-so-important...memorable moments that we as movie watchers love so much.
Positives:Rebecca DeMornay shows that she hasn't lost a beat after being off the thriller scene for years. The films beginning and ending are intense.
Negatives:No real memorable moments of death scenes to speak of. The tired and played out and...seemingly these days in horror, obligatory...rape scene makes an appearance in the film. Lack of scares, suspense, intensity, and fun overall. And too many predictable twists and turns.
Overall:Barely two stars out of four. Only for DeMornay's performance as "Mother".
