[Insidious]
Plot:A young family makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities, while his consciousness lies trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as "The Further."
Cast:Patrick Wilson,
Barbara Hershey,
Rose Byrne,
Ty Simpkins,
Lin Shaye,
Andrew Astor.
My Thoughts:Works well as a formula most of the way.
Review:"Insidious" is Hollywood's latest attempt at scary-ghostiness. Movies like this haven't turned out well in the past. Ghost horror these days always seems to take the more conventional route of doing things for some reason. There's a fear of too much risk taking I guess. "Insidious" does have one thing working in it's favor though.
The fact that the talent behind it's script are Leigh Whannell and James Wan. The guys who brought us "Saw" and "Dead Silence". Both guys know ghosts and gore better than anyone. "Insidious" lacks the cleverness of "Saw", and the slick set pieces of "Dead Silence" though. So it's left to really fend for itself by literally scaring the audience. An act which it succeeds in doing mostly because it takes some conventional methods, and sharpens them a bit.
The dull blade of the A-typical supernatural-horror film, is the moment where someone sees something that isn't there. Or when some scary noises come out over the baby monitor. "Insidious" uses all of these bells and whistles. But...manages to sharpen them heavily. So they actually carry more of an effect. And are met with an excitement from the viewer. Instead of a sigh and or yawn. In between the moments where some spooky stuff occurs, the film manages to throw us a two part story.
The movie begins with the scenario that a family's young son is being stalked by evil spirits. But it counter-balances that with the stereotypical "mom believes" "dad doesn't" storyline. Think "Paranormal Activity 2", when the wife knows something effed up is happening, but the husband couldn't give a crap. Same rule applies here. And like in "PA 2"...time is of the essence. Because you know in movies like this, soon...it'll be too late. The demon/spirit, or what have you, will have dug it's claws in way too deep at some point.
And the family will be royally screwed at some point. This film goes through the usual paces though. Even offering up the usual scene where the family decides to move from their home after a series of disturbing incidents caused by this "spirit". But "it" just follows them, and starts coming after the kid again. Now who didn't see that coming eh? Yes...this film is anything but clever, or unique. But the way it's shot, and how the scare moments are played out. Actually manages to neutralize most of the cliche plot twists and turns.
It kind of acts as the glade plugin to the films cliche and predictable stench at times. "Insidious" is one of those rare films where the script is loaded with enough creepy moments, to fight back the tide of campy moments and cliche plot twists. Even when things get very cliche, like when the family calls in a medium, and a few other paranormal invetigator types to deal with their "problem". The movie still manages to offer up some heavily creepy moments.
Involving the demon, and it's nasty little nack for popping up and then popping out...of the picture. You don't get to see the demon too much, until down the gut of the movie. But the way the films villain is played out and revealed is very effective. Strangely enough, the films tries to smarten up for some reason in the third act. Driven already by decent performances from Patrick Wilson and others...as well as some effective and tense scare moments. I am not sure why the movie chose act three and the finale, to throw in a stupid plot twist.
I guess they wanted to somehow tie their ending, into all of the films earlier dialogue about spirits possessing the living, and such talk. But when I think about it...these guys made "Saw" and "Dead Silence"...so a crazy whirlwind ending that serves no purpose other than dramatic effect...is not a shock coming from these guys, Wan and Whannell. But I just thought it ruined the movie. Which could've had a much smarter ending than what we got originally. At any rate, "Insidious" does new things with old scares. And that's enough to make it get the "worth seeing once" opinion and after thought from me.
Positives:Good directing, creating some scary camera angles. There are also many creepy scenes strolled around the movie. Which kind of mimic what the producers of "Paranormal Activity" and it's sequel did. They don't work as well as they did in those films, but they work nonetheless. Good performances by Wilson, Hershey, and Shaye.
Negatives:The ending is just off kilter. Really needed a rewrite.
Overall:Two and a half stars out of four.
