[Half Moon]
Plot:Rose, a down-on-her-luck prostitute who's short on cash. When she hears of a mysterious client named Jacob who pays a large sum of money for one night in a hotel, she goes against her better judgment and takes the assignment. At the hotel, Jacob proves to be a strange client: he's willing to pay up front, and is more interested in honest conversation than anything else. Then, just as Rose begins to feel at ease, she learns that Jacob is about to undergo a transformation by the light of the full moon - and she's about find herself trapped in close quarters with a terrifying monster.

My Thoughts:Quite a hairy situation.

Review:"Half Moon" is a straight-to-dvd werewolf film that follows a prostitute who ends up getting a nice guy on her latest "job". But it turns out, that this nice guy...is actually a werewolf. And when the "job" goes sideways, she ends up being trapped in a room with him. To be blunt, this film is quite terrible. But when a movie boasts a porn star (Tori Black), as it's lead in a quote unquote..."break out role"...you know you're not for Shakespere here. But you atleast expect a decent run. Something that "Half Moon" wasn't.

The movie boasts itself as a werewolf film, but then when things begin...it decides to take a turn as a social commentary/dialogue-driven quasi-horror movie. It felt less like a full-blown werewolf movie, and more like what should've been part of a horror anthology film as maybe it's 1st or 2nd story. Instead, this is a whole 80 minute or so movie...that really goes nowhere beyond one big, long conversation. The gist of the film is that this werewolf guy, and this prostitute...are supposed to have something in common.

The werewolf guy doesn't like being a werewolf, but has no choice considering he was bitten by one a long time ago. So he is upset because he has no control over his own body when the transformations begin. The prostitute, played by Tori Black...has no control over her own body either. But in a different kind of way, since she is under the tutelage of an abusive pimp. And is forced to have sex for money. The dynamic is interesting, and quite above-par for a film like this, a small indie production. But in the big scheme of things...you just can't run an 85 minute movie off of this one basis.

After all, this is a werewolf film. So one would expect a werewolf kill, or two, or three. Or some cool transformation scene where the guy transforms, and rips the room and some innocent bystander apart. Instead, "Half Moon" us a dopey werewolf lovestory of some sort, that tries to be clever in it's social and world commentary, but doesn't mix all of that with enough horror elements. The film just sets up this scenario, and then has the prostitute find a bag full of rope and other malicious objects that belong to her latest client.

Then she turns the tables on the werewolf guy, before calling her pimp once she discovers a safe full of money. So the pimp shows up, and then leaves again to get some tools to open the safe. Leaving his "employee" to keep an eye on her client. From there, the movie...which has already talked us to death before all of this happened...proceeds to talk us to death some more. And never really gets anywhere beyond two people sitting in a room, conversating too much, and rehashing old arguments and points. If there were ever a time for trimming scenes of dialogue, "Half Moon" needed it...big time.

To put it simply, this film is all "howl"and no "bite". The story isn't complex, or hard to follow. Nor are the writers ideas and points, of which he tries to make with the story and the script. But the issue here is simple...a werewolf movie is supposed to boast a mean, nasty, werewolf. Not long, drawn-out conversations about how much some guy hates being a werewolf, and how much some prostitute hates tricking for dollars. If I wanted to hear this sort of talk, I could visit one of the many seedy areas in New York City. Sure, no one would be complaining about being a werewolf...but you could replace the word "werewolf" with tons of other tags, titles, or labels people are stuck with or have stuck on themselves in real life.

If you're thinking "Half Moon" is gonna be one of those cool, surprisingly good indie werewolf flicks...as you pass by it at the video store. Think again. This movie was worse than other indie werewolf debacles such as "Big Bad Wolf", and "Skinwalkers". And those are two levels of failure that cinematically...are very hard to reach.

Positives:The story was a good idea, just poorly written and furthermore...poorly executed.

Negatives:Too many long and drawn out conversations for a film that is supposed to be a werewolf movie with a quote..."terrifying monster" involved. A severe lack of entertainment value as well.

Overall:Half a star out of four.
