[F]
Plot:"F" is set in a sprawling U.K. comprehensive school, after lessons have finished for the day. It tells the story of Robert Anderson, a burned-out world-weary English teacher, a man who has to face his most terrifying demons.

The school comes under relentless attack from a group of blood thirsty hoodies, intent on one thing and one thing only, to spread terror. Anderson must battle these brutal killers, and his deepest fears, in a desperate battle for the survival of his pupils, fellow teachers and those he holds most dear.

Cast:David Schofield, Eliza Bennett, Ruth Gemmell.

My Thoughts:Falls far short of being great.

Review:"F" is the next chapter in an emerging European horror film trend. The "killer-hooded-kids-horror film". It started with the French pic "Ils" (Them), and ever since then, we've seen a spike in films where hooded teens stalk and kill their mostly adult prey. Along the way, other horror films have made thuggish youth into slasher movie villains, "Eden Lake" for example. Most people see these films as new-age "Children Of The Corn" or "Lord Of The Flies" knock-offs.

Instead of the kids being driven by some sort of unseen evil, they're driven by simple strength in numbers, bad attitudes, and malicious natures. "F" however doesn't manage to create and replicate the same suspense, chills, and thrills "Eden Lake" and "Ils" brought to the table however. And that's where it falls short ultimately. In the movie, we get a glimpse at the very beginning, of some of today's social issues pertaining to schools, and how they have changed over the years.

At the start, a teacher has trouble with a rogue student. And ends up getting the blame from the principal when he gives the kid a failing grade, an "F"...on a recent project. The principal thinks the teacher, Robert Anderson (Schofield), might've hurt the students feelings by doing this. To make matters worse, the most recent confrontation he's had with this aforementioned student, has now led to the kids parents threatening suit against Robert and the school. Thus Robert is pretty much told to to go away until this whole thing blows over, and the student moves on and graduates.

11 months later, Robert, who now has the troublemaking student out of his hair...but is currently having issues with his teenage daughter now, returns to teaching. And later that night, the school comes under attack from a gang of hooded youths with a violent streak. Now the teachers must fight for their lives against these mystery assailants, if they want to survive. The big problem with "F" is it doesn't flesh out the story enough. The attack on the school is unprovoked, and comes out of nowhere. Sure, this creates suspense and terror somewhat.

But by the middle of the movie, you expect some sort of cohesion to show up. To bring the plot full-circle. Instead, it never does show up. The movie really expects to ride the gravy train of random events. And the viewer is just supposed to relish the cat-and-mouse game of these kids randomly attacking and killing the teachers and anyone else in their way. Popping out of dark spaces, places, and shadows as and before...they commit these haneous acts. Tis why this movie fails.

It just tries to capitalize off of this sub-sect of this new genre of horror. But does so without putting together a cohesive and sensible story and or plot. I couldn't enjoy the movie to be honest. Despite it's somewhat likeable use of suspense, and the constant surprise attacks from it's villains. And it's use of loud noises and bangs at very appropriate moments. I couldn't enjoy the movie despite those things, because it just didn't explain enough about well...pretty much anything.

We never find out who these kids are. What they want, their motives, etc. It's just random kids, random attacks, random motives. Too much random stuff. Not enough connecting the dots and atleast giving the viewer some sembleance of a story or story arc. The film is decently scored though, and while the death sequences aren't anything terribly original, the suspense and scoring of the murder scenes bring a strong and powerful effect to the moments of death for some of the films characters. The movies ending is just as ambiguous and vague as it's villains and their identities and motives.

And this is just another strike against the movie in the long run. In the end, "F" is for people who can appreciate a juicy mystery/horror/thriller movie. People like myself. But the question is, do you like your juicy mystery/horror/thriller movies with a side of broken story and sloppy writing? If you do, or can tolerate or look past such blemishes...then you'll probably come away satisfied with "F". But if you don't, won't, or can't...accept these things, along with an extremely and unusually high amount of ambiguity...along with your mystery/horror/thriller films...then you'll probably feel as cheated out of your 75 life minutes, as I did.

Positives:Good scoring especially, during the death scenes. A decent story, and great directing.

Negatives:A decent story which isn't beefed up or fleshed out enough to be as strong and solid as it could've been. Too much ambiguity within the story itself, the ending, and many other parts.

Overall:Two out of four stars.
