My Thoughts:Would've made a better TV series.
Review:"Dylan Dog:Dead Of Night" is Kevin Munroe's film adaptation of the "Dylan Dog" comic series. Where the title character stalks the streets of London, solving monster-related mysteries. The film version though, sets itself inside New Orleans. Where an art collector is killed by a huge beast. A werewolf. Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh), questions the victims daughter about the murder, but is apprehensive about taking on her case.
That is until, he learns the murder was part of a grand and growing conspiracy, which could put the monster world into a scenario where it bleeds over into the human world. As the different sects of monsters go into full on war with one another. If there's one thing "Dead Of Night" is not, it's original. The movie takes it's cue's from previous vampire/werewolf films and even series. The monster world is hidden amongst the human world in this fictional version of New Orleans. For example. The werewolves, zombies, vampires, all walk amongst the humans unnoticed.
Dylan's job was to keep order within the community, by investigating the crimes of the bad monsters. The ones who didn't want to simply live in peace amongst the humans. But once his girlfriend was killed by one of these monsters, Dylan sought revenge. And then got out of the case solving business. We've all seen this sort of story arc before. Where the human world lives in unbeknownst peace with the monster world. There's also a few subplots here involving a dealer of vampire blood (True Blood), and of course the werewolves and vampires don't get along.
But they also have their own inter-clan rivalries as well. This movie would've gotten boring really fast if they had went too much into detail about this stuff. But they really just gloss over it as a moot point. And it's really just used to get Dylan from point A to point B as the film progresses. Of course the dead collector's daughter has to be a hot, petite little blonde. Who without Dylan to protect her, is surely going to end up getting bumped off by a vampire, werewolf, or whomever feels she is getting too close to figuring out who killed her father.
Although there is an intriguing twist involving her character, which I won't spoil here though. The film does make sure to try...key word...to do some things differently. For example, the cast is more upper crust than other films like this. Which would pretty much stock their ranks with indie actors or vague thespians. Sam Huntington who is fast becoming a household name thanks to "Being Human" on SyFy. Appears in the film as Dylan's sidekick. Who ends up getting killed, and returns as a zombie. The funny part is, he is not a slow, lumbering, braindead zombie. But rather a functional zombie.
He still has the bad smell, cannot eat human foods, and of course the bad skin. But he can still function and help Dylan out per usual. Brandon Routh (Scott Pilgrim), of course plays Dylan. And TNA wrestler Kurt Angle, and veteran actor Taye Diggs...both makes appearances as as very powerful members of different werewolf sects. Each of which are prime suspects in the murder of the films lead female's dad. But Digg's character more so because as Vargas, he is more of a smooth-talking shady type. Angle's character is quite intense and brutish.
Which normally means that the real villain is someone who's the total opposite of said character. Not much blood and guts in this film though. Which is strange for a movie about monsters but to be honest..."Jack Brooks:Monster Slayer" had more gore than this film. "Dylan Dog" tries to be really family friendly. Not just with it's content, but also with it's comedic aspects as well. Which aren't really as funny as they are badly out of place, and at times...misplaced in full. I almost felt, as I watched...that this film should've just been re-routed into a television series.
It felt like a very long episode of "Angel". Routh even had a David Boreanaz vibe going on at times. As a movie, it just comes off as boring and lackluster. Especially considering the film never really has that pivotal moment of doom, gloom, or shock. There's no shocking demises here, no WTF moments, and beyond a joke Vargas makes about Dylan staying "retired"...the movies third and final act is really dreadfully boring. It tries to be somewhat of an impact with the twist involving the daughter of the murdered collector. But in reality, even that cannot save this picture. It's not a film that's easy to hate.
Nor is it a film that you'd want to hate. But it's just one of those monster/horror movies that fails to "bring it" in any way, shape, or form. Thus, it doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat at all. That is unless you've fallen asleep on it due to boredom, and are sliding out of your chair with each breath. "Dylan Dog:Dead Of Night" is about as interesting as a body on a slab. And is about as "alive" with entertainment value, as it's undead cast of good guys and bad guys. If the film had added a little pep to all of the boredom, it could've possibly atleast broke even.
Positives:A few funny one-liners here and there. Taye Diggs makes for a decent bad guy.
Negatives:The script is just too damn boring. You keep waiting for something to spark this film along and it never comes. Like I said, this project would've been better as an episodic tv series which could build on it's momentum which each new episode. A full run on almost 2 hour movie version didn't work.
Overall:One star out of four.
