[Black Swan]
Plot:Centers on a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.

My Thoughts:Intriguing tale of madness.
Review:"Black Swan" is Darren Aronofsky's attempt at a pragmatic blend of drama/horror/thriller, and some supernatural elements as well. The pic is set at a prestigious ballet company in New York, where a bunch of girls are competing for the lead role in a production called ''Swan Lake". The films opening makes saying this production is important to all the girls there, needless to say. The pressure is high for all of them to "impress" their instructor played by Vincent Cassel.
So they can get the lead role of the White Swan in the production. The competition eventually boils down to two dancers, Nina (Portman), and Lily (Kunis). This after one of the dancers commits suicide in a horrifying moment. When Nina eventually pulls ahead of her competition, and scores the role of the White Swan, she soon finds herself undergoing strange personality changes.
Changes that she seems to have less and less control over as time goes on, and opening night of the production nears. Has she come under some sort of posession? Or is she just pushing herself past her mental breaking point in preparation for the role of a lifetime? "Black Swan" would typically be a very painfully, boring film in it's current form. Sure, horror films and ballet have clashed before.
"Suspiria" for example. But that was Italian horror. And Italian horror and American horror are two different breeds. And considering American horror these days has a weak track record of successfully scaring the audience, I personally wasn't so convinced "Black Swan" would work for me. But the film works at a 90% clip, because it doesn't make the equation easy for you. It's not a movie that gives you all the answers up front, or in the middle, or even at the end. It "baits and switches" often, and keeps you guessing long enough for you to overlook the poorly ratcheted up drama and bitchiness between the female performers in the movie, and the somewhat annoying teacher character played by Cassel.
It's a film filled with intrigue, and mystery. Mystery and intrigue which can even be creepy and disturbing at times. Portman and Kunis, as the movies principal female players, play well off of one another in the scenes that they have together. But alone, both actresses aren't really given enough to work with. Although I preferred Kunises performance over Portman's because Kunis was the more attitudy character. Portman is a good actress, but her character was too sugary and delicate for me.
Kunis as Lily...on the other hand, was more mysterious, dynamic, and interesting to watch. You can never really pinpoint her character for a large portion of the film, in direction to Portman's character Nina. Is Lily friend? Foe? Or a little bit of both? And in the end, which one will she choose to be? That's why Lily was the more interesting of the two.
Nina was likeable sure, but watching Portman as that character on screen at times was painful. The character was whiny at times, and too nice at other times. But this works for the film, since the big rub of the movie is Nina trying to hone her skills as a performer to the point where she can play the delicate White Swan, and her evil twin The Black Swan. Which is the whole story of the production these people are practicing for. And the beauty of the movie is how the production itself, ties in nicely with the evolution of Nina, and how the movie progresses. All the way up to it's finale, which is pretty strong, and also psychologically trippy.
Hardcore genre fans can expect nothing quote unquote "hardcore", from "Black Swan". It's not a hyper-violent movie. Not a ton of profanity, nor any chase scenes of any sort. It can be summed up as "Suspiria", in a more psychological fashion. Less visual terror, and more psychological terror. Wrapped in a slow-moving story with modestly well-done performances. If you go in with that mentality, you'll enjoy the movie more than expecting it to be the second-coming of "Suspiria", or expecting something on the level of terror as "Ringu", or "Ju-On". It's neither of those things. It sticks to exactly what it is, and what it can be. And in that regard, it works well enough to entertain.
Positives:Portman and Kunis carry the film in their own ways and styles of acting. But I liked Kunis as Lily more, as she had an edge. The scenes that are supposed to be trippy and or creepy work for the most part. The ending is very strong.
Negatives:At times, the film moves too slow. The "girl drama" between the dancers at times seems forced and shallow.
Overall:Three stars out of four.
