[Battle:Los Angeles]
Plot:Follows one Marine platoon's encounter in the battle against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles.

My Thoughts:Been there...seen that.
Review:It seems the current Hollywood trend is these alien movies where the invaders are violent and unfriendly. And a lone group of humans have to, and are forced to do battle with them. Sometimes it's marines...other times, it's the average Joe and a few of his or her friends. In "Battle L.A."...a lone marine platoon is deployed to take on the invaders. These aliens aren't gross-looking though. Ala "Aliens", "The Faculty", etc. They kind of are more robotic/dronish type of invaders. So this film is kind of like "G.I. Joe" meets "District 9".
And despite having a reasonably decent cast, comprised of Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez..."Battle:Los Angeles" manages to come off as more boring and tedious than exciting, explosive, and rock solid. Which is what it was supposed to be. Look...when you see the trailers and clips and tv spots for "Battle:Los Angeles"...you know what you're getting when you pay to see it. More explosions, gunfire, and cinematic bravery. All wrapped within the confines of a story about evil alien invaders. Well...that's what I was expecting.
I'm sure some people were expecting something like "Cloverfield". I was a bit more film savvy than that though. But you also expect another thing. A popcorn flick. A movie where you just turn your brain off, and enjoy the ride. But "Battle:Los Angeles" couldn't even accomplish that. This film is nothing like "Transformers". Which was a straight up popcorn movie. Involving the U.S. military taking on an existential integalactic threat. That film managed to be exciting, fun, and summer-flick'esque.
Ridiculous and silly at times. But hey, it was fun to watch. "Battle:LA" on the other hand...was painful to watch. The characters are A-typical military types. Tough talking, harsh-toned, and there are the usual scenes of a soldier or two telling one of his comrades to pass a note to their significant other should they "fail to make it". But the movie just doesn't have that fire. That "oomph"...that a movie like this needs. A film like "Battle:Los Angeles" needs some fire in it's belly. And even during the shooting/war/combat scenes...the movie fails to please.
The actors cannot be blamed though. They all played their parts well. It's just that the script was too soft. It didn't manage to excite or thrill one bit. It kind of mailed it in from the start actually. And the characters were left to be nothing but repetitive military movie character cliches. Michelle Rodriguez manages to turn in a good acting job. But Her character is the only bright spot in this entire movie. Which by the way, was missing the one thing films like this MUST have. That BIG MOMENT. "War Of The Worlds" had more than a few.
"Cloverfield" had more than a few, even "Skyline" had one. "Battle:Los Angeles" had NONE. ZERO. ZIP. ZILCH. It's hard to see any reason why this film was even made. Other than to capitalize on the alien vs. human cash cow, that I guess Hollywood sees as viable now. Most likely, come June...when JJ Abrams "Super 8" comes out, "Battle LA" will be a distant memory. Not only because it'll be June...but also because the film flat out sucked. I wouldn't advise seeing "Battle:Los Angeles" unless you're a major fan of one of the films stars.
Whether it be Michelle or Aaron. And you're one of those types of people who'll see any movie that they're in since you're a huge fan. But for people who want a good time at the movies. Or like action films mixed with a slight scifi/horror element. And that are exciting and awesome, might wanna just rent "Cloverfield" again. "Battle Los Angeles" loses it's battle against boring the audience. A film where the script truly fails it's actors in every aspect of the term.
Positives:Rodriguez and Eckhart do their ebst to carry this lacklusterly-written movie.
Negatives:The films script is so flawed it cannot seem to turn any of it's key action moments into cinematic gold.
Overall:One star out of four.
