[And Soon The Darkness]
Plot:Set in Argentina, tells the story of two American girls on a bike-riding trip in a remote part of the country. When one of them goes missing, the other must find her before darkness falls and her worst fears are realized.

Cast:Odette Yustman, Amber Heard, Karl Urban, Adrianna Barraza.

My Thoughts:Another cautionary tale.

Review:So I am not sure who if anyone thought "And Soon The Darkness" was gonna be this great film. I had hopes for it on the very first day it was announced. But as more and more came out about it, with pics, and then the trailer...my hopes faded quicker than Milli Vanilli's careers. The movie is a remake of the old european horror pic, only like "The Invisible" (2007), this remake strays from the horror roots of the original. Instead, it blends elements of "Taken" with "Turistas", and the like. The movie follows two friends on a biking trip through Argentina.

Things go pretty well for the duo, played by Heard and Yustman, until they run into some locals. Heard's character Stephanie is far more conservative than her best friend Ellie, played by Yustman. So while Ellie flirts and parties with some of the locals, Stephanie decides to play it safe. The reason for this eventually comes out later on in the film, and it leads to a verbal skirmish between the two young ladies. Meanwhile, the two are watched closely by a mysterious American man named Michael (Urban), who's motives remain a mystery for most of the movie.

Ellie and Stephanie, against the wishes of their hotel clerk Rosamaria (Barraza), decide to go tanning at a remote location in the country. This then leads to Ellie being carried off by a mystery person. Now, Stephanie must find her before her worst fears are realized. There's absolutely nothing scary about "And Soon The Darkness", despite it's title, and being a remake of the 1970's British flick, which was a horror/mystery/thriller. There's no blood, gore, intensity, suspense, or edge here ala a film like "Turistas". "Turistas" was far more horror than "ASTD" was.

The movie wasn't a total horror film, but it had strong elements of horror. "And Soon The Darkness" though had none. Zero, zilch. Like I said, there's nothing scary about this movie unless you're a hot girl in your early 20's, who's biking, hiking, or trekking in a strange country you've never been in before. The movie's message is the usual cat and mouse game. Hot girl gets snatched by human-smuggling locals, her equally hot friend must find her before it's too late, and she gets now help from the local cops because they're all on the take, or involved in the smuggling themselves.

I don't know what the obsession is with telling all of these cautionary tales in the horror genre is, but I hope it ends soon. I was expecting at worst, a thriller with some horror elements. Ala the original. The remake was just a watered down more visually appealing version of "Taken". Yustman and Heard give good performances as polar opposite best friends. And Urban as the mysterious stranger who has a connection to the events which occur, is also decent. But the story is so boring, and annoying to watch, that you overlook the decent performances on more than a few levels.

Even as you feel pity for Heard's character Stephanie, as she tries her best to find and rescue Ellie before a horrible fate befalls her. The movie just follows the expected pattern of how a film like this would go. No surprises or intriguing twists of any kind. As for the synopsis, well it points to Stephanie's worst fears being realized when darkness falls. Well, there is a tie in there to the movie itself, but trust me...it's nothing scary. But rather just a hint at what will happen to Ellie if Stephanie doesn't find her in time. So if you're thinking it's anything horror related, think again.

In fact...think again before you even contemplate seeing this movie. Despite having a good cast of Heard (Zombieland), Yustman (The Unborn), and Barraza (Drag Me To Hell), the story is weak and the action and suspense is even weaker. This tale of random hot chick getting snatched while on holiday is horror alright. HORRIBLE...that is. Don't waste your time with this one, despite the deceptive advertising and such.

Positives:Heard, Yustman, and Barraza all give good performances. The final 10 minutes are decent.

Negatives:It's just not a horror movie. But instead a remake of a horror movie that the remake makers decided to take in a drama/cautionary tale direction. Add to that, the film was mostly boring, and a rehash of other trouble-in-paradise films of the past.

Overall:One star out of four.
