[51]
Plot:Chronicles what happens after political pressure from the American public forces the Air Force to decide to allow a select few well-known reporters limited access to the most secretive base on the planet: Area 51. But when one of the base's hidden "long term visitors" exploits this unprecedented visit as a chance to liberate himself and his fellow alien captives, Area 51 turns from a secure government base to a horrifying destination of terror.

Cast:Bruce Boxleitner, Rachel Miner, Jason London, John Shea.

My Thoughts:Decent scifi-horror effort.

Review:I am not big on alien films outside of the famous "Alien" franchise. I think most alien or extraterrestrial-related films take the easy way out too much. They either choose to be corny and lame. Or choose to use hyper-low-budgets which make everything looks absolutely horrible. Thus creating a terrible atmosphere all around. Jason Connery's "51" tries to do it's best with what it has. And through doing that, and some nicely-played story twists...it manages to come out in the end as a decent scifi/horror effort.

The film follows a group of people who are allowed entry and clearance into the infamous "Area 51"...to get a tour of the facility. But of course, things go horribly wrong. Horribly wrong in the form of a vicious alien and it's baby, which manage to escape their pens, and a shapeshifter alien which manages to escape as well. Now...everyone must band together to stop all three from escaping the facility before it's too late.

"51" manages to assemble a pretty good cast, including Jason London...a veteran of B-movie cinema it seems these days. Rachel Miner, no stranger to indie films herself. And John Shea. A veteran actor who's been in a lot of different venues. This film scores points for atleast keeping any obnoxious teenager characters out of the picture. All of these people are adults or young adults. Which adds character likeability.

The last thing a small-budget indie scifi/horror film needs when you're focusing strictly on extraterrestrials, are annoying teens running around. Granted, not all teenage characters in films are bad...it's just that for some reason, Hollywood tends to write them that way. At any rate, the movie takes awhile to get to the good stuff (aka rampaging aliens), but the character development is pretty decent so it doesn't bore you to death. But the military types in the film are as cliche as can be.

These guys are really the types of stiffs you'd see in any film involving the military. I thought "The Hills Have Eyes 2" military grunts were the best developed military characters I had seen in a horror film in quite some time. These guys though, are a total 180. The dialogue is cliche, the stupidity is cliche also. For example...when the shapeshifter alien makes his move to try and escape...naturally, the entire hand is played badly by the guards...who end up being outsmarted by the deadly invader.

And thus allow him to escape his cell, and do even more damage. And their boss is of course the A-typical shady military guy who while he's not totally evil, has those "skeletons" in the closet which definitely call into question his moral compass. Two military characters who stand out however are played by London and Miner. Who once the you know what hits the fan, team up with a few other guards to try and kill the aliens before they can escape. Miner gives the better performance of the two in my opinion, but London is a close second.

Miner also takes over the role of lead female in the film, from a blonde actress who stars as the movies female lead in the start of the picture. A blogger for a blog which investigates secret military stuff. The character isn't very exciting though, from a film-viewer point of view. So it's not surprising that the film eventually turns to Miner's character to be it's saving grace as far as the female lead role is concerned. There are some intriguing twists to "51" though.

For starters, one of the staff members at "Area 51" turns out to be an alien, and plays a key role in the battle between the hostiles and the humans. Although I won't spoil how it turns out, nor will I spoil the aliens allegiances here in this review. But it's certainly one of those unexpected moments that you wouldn't expect a movie like this to throw at you. Another good thing about "51" is it's lack of terrible CGI. It uses more cleaned up CGI...blended with creature fx to create it's monsters.

Makes the film more visually appealing and easier to watch. After all, SyFy has been known and notorious for some bad cgi in their films. But I guess considering this movie is more an After Dark Films production overall, as it was set to be part of their After Dark Originals slate back in January...that's the reason for the better visual effects. "51" also offers up some good spots of action, and concludes on a very decent note. Overall, the viewing experience was a good one. "51" could've easily taken the low road with cheap filmmaking, writing, etc. But this is actually one of those scifi/horror/alien films that gives all it's got to further enhance the overall product to above-average levels. Pretty good.

Positives:Shea, Miner, and London all give good performances. The creature fx are above-average. Good action scenes, and some intriguing twists.

Negatives:Some of the characters are under-developed, and the military characters are a tad bit too cliche/military industrial complex.

Overall:Two and a half stars out of four.
